It stands in the Central Tien Shan on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border, near the point where both meet China, about 330 km east of Almaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The marble pyramid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name translates from the Turkic as &#8220;Lord of the Sky&#8221; &#8211; Tengri being the sky deity of the old nomadic world &#8211; and the mountain earns it. Its upper pyramid is banded marble, and at sunset the whole summit glows pink, then deep red. Kazakh and Kyrgyz herders had their own name for that spectacle: Kan Tau, the Blood Mountain. Mountaineers consider it one of the most beautiful peaks on earth, and it is the summit every climber in Central Asia measures themselves against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climbing Khan Tengri<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First climbed in 1931 by Mikhail Pogrebetsky&#8217;s expedition, Khan Tengri remains a serious mountaineer&#8217;s mountain &#8211; there is no easy way up. The classic routes start from base camps on the North Inylchek glacier (the Kazakh side) and the South Inylchek (the Kyrgyz side), with the West Ridge as the standard line &#8211; graded 5A at minimum, with fixed-rope sections, crevassed glacier approaches and weather that can pin expeditions down for days. As the most northerly 7,000 m peak, it is colder than its altitude suggests; the season is brutally short, essentially mid-July to late August. It is one of the five &#8220;Snow Leopard&#8221; peaks &#8211; the mountaineering award for climbing all the former USSR&#8217;s seven-thousanders &#8211; and for many climbers it is the most coveted of the five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there &#8211; and how to see it without climbing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expeditions reach base camp by helicopter from the Karkara valley on the Kazakh side &#8211; roughly a day&#8217;s travel east from Almaty, then a 40-minute flight over the glaciers. But you do not need a climbing permit to see Khan Tengri. On clear days the marble pyramid is visible from the <a href=\"\/en\/tuzkol-lake\/\">Tuzkol Lake<\/a> area on the Kazakh high steppe &#8211; the classic photographer&#8217;s viewpoint, where the peak rises behind the salt lake at dawn &#8211; and from the Karkara valley itself. Early morning gives the most reliable views; by afternoon the summit usually builds its own cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Khan Tengri: quick answers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Khan Tengri the tallest mountain in Kazakhstan?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes &#8211; at 6,995 m (7,010 m with its ice cap) it is the highest point of Kazakhstan. The Tien Shan does hold one higher summit, Pobeda Peak at 7,439 m, but that mountain stands on the Kyrgyzstan-China border; Khan Tengri is the roof of Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do sources give two different heights?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rock summit measures 6,995 m; the permanent ice cap on top brings it to 7,010 m.
