A guided day hike through the Shukur (Chukur) gorge to Lunar Meadow (~2,337 m) and the Shukur Waterfall, with an optional extension to Big Almaty Lake<\/a> on foot. This is the gentlest route into the upper Big Almaty Gorge system \u2014 a well-trodden trail through spruce forest, past a natural spring, to a wide alpine clearing scattered with boulders that give the meadow its name. On clear nights, the unobstructed sky above the meadow is one of the best stargazing spots near Almaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunar Meadow is also a trail junction \u2014 paths diverge from here to Big Almaty Lake<\/a>, Peak Skalistyi<\/a> (3,332 m), the moraine lakes of Sovetov and Lokomotiv peaks, and the upper Kumbel-su valley. For clients building toward harder objectives, this hike familiarises you with the approach that leads to nearly every summit in the Big Almaty Gorge system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to expect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The trail starts at the Alpine Rose hotel (~2,220 m) in the Big Almaty Gorge. From Almaty, drive up the gorge road (via Dulati street \/ Alma-Arasan), past the eco-post, and up the steep switchbacks to the hotel. Alternatively, take bus #28 to the end stop and taxi from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the hotel, turn right into the Shukur gorge. The trail is well-marked and popular \u2014 even on weekdays, you’ll see other hikers. A short, moderately steep climb (~1.5 km) leads through spruce forest, past a reliable fresh spring (the best-tasting water in the area, according to your own team), and onto the open meadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunar Meadow (~2,337 m)<\/strong> is a wide, flat clearing surrounded by mountains \u2014 Peak Skalistyi<\/a> rises dramatically to the south. The meadow gets its name from the scattered boulders that give it a lunar quality, and from the open sky that makes it exceptional for night-sky observation. A camping zone with picnic spots and swings is established here \u2014 the meadow is a popular weekend destination for Almaty residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shukur Waterfall (~2,670 m)<\/strong> is 700 m and approximately 30\u201340 minutes beyond the meadow, through a small forest and up a narrowing rocky gorge. The waterfall drops over a rock cliff into the gorge \u2014 compact, photogenic, and refreshing on a hot day (swimming possible in summer). In early summer, compacted avalanche snow may still cover the approach \u2014 your guide navigates this safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optional extension to Big Almaty Lake:<\/strong> From the meadow, a trail branches right (west) and traverses the western slopes of Peak Skalistyi, crossing small saddles and “lunar” clearings before emerging at the eastern shore of Big Almaty Lake<\/a> (~1.5 km). From the lake, you can descend along the road back to Alpine Rose (~2.5 km), completing a circular route.
