Molodezhnaya is the peak with a glacier falling from one side and steep scree-and-rock slopes plunging off the other. It is also the peak where you sleep at 4,150 metres — a summit bivouac that delivers sunrise and sunset panoramas few Almaty mountains can match.

The approach comes from the Big Almaty Gorge side, through the Shukur gorge and over a col into the wild Kumbel-su valley — a route that passes Lake No. 13, the hydrologist’s hut, and the Molodezhnyi Glacier before climbing the southwestern ridge to the summit. This is a different world from the standard Tuyuk-Su approach via Shymbulak: quieter, wilder, and with significantly more route-finding.

What to expect on the Peak Molodezhnaya climb

Peak Molodezhnaya sits in the Kumbel spur — a northwest-running ridge that divides two major gorge systems. On its northern face, the Molodezhnyi Glacier spills down toward the Tuyuk-Su area and the Glaciological Station T-1 (established 1956, still active). On its southern flanks, steep scree and rock drop into Kumbel-su. The summit ridge is narrow, with exposure on both sides — a genuine alpine experience at a relatively accessible altitude.

The standard approach from the Maloe Almatinskoe side (via Shymbulak and the Tuyuk-Su glacier moraine) is used by the annual Alpiniada mass climb and the Almaty Mountaineering Federation. Our route takes the opposite approach — from the Big Almaty Gorge through Kumbel-su — which is longer but passes through more varied and scenic terrain with far fewer people.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Big Almaty Gorge to high camp on the Kumbel ridge (~3,400–3,500 m)

Transfer to Alpine Rose area. Vehicle from Almaty to the Big Almaty Gorge, past the checkpoints to the Alpine Rose hotel area (~2,200 m). The trail begins here, turning from the main gorge road into the Shukur gorge — the same entrance used for the Lunar Meadow and Peak Skalistyi routes.

Through Shukur gorge and over the col into Kumbel-su. The route climbs through the Shukur gorge, past the Lunar Meadow (Лунная поляна), and continues to a col that crosses from the Big Almaty Gorge drainage into the Kumbel-su valley. This is the transition point — behind you is the familiar BAG landscape; ahead is a wilder valley that drops away to the northwest.

Kumbel-su valley. Descend into the Kumbel-su valley — a long, narrow gorge with a chain of small moraine lakes and a hydrologist’s hut (the “домик гидрологов”) used seasonally by researchers monitoring the glacial river’s mudflow risk. The valley is rarely visited. Lake No. 13 — a small glacial tarn — sits at the base of the Molodezhnaya massif.

Ascent to high camp on the ridge (~3,400–3,500 m). From the valley floor, climb onto the southwestern ridge of Molodezhnaya. The terrain is steep scree and grass, gaining altitude quickly. A flat meadow between the ridge crest and the moraine of the Sovetov Glacier provides a sheltered camp spot at approximately 3,400–3,500 m. Water is available from snowmelt streams. Views from camp: the Molodezhnyi Glacier to the north, the Kumbel-su valley below, and — on the horizon — the main Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge.

Day 1 stats: ~8 km, +1,200–1,300 m elevation gain. Duration: 5–6 hours walking.

Day 2: Summit Molodezhnaya (4,147 m) and return

Early start — ridge ascent. Leave camp at first light. The route follows the southwestern ridge upward — initially broad and walkable, then narrowing as the glacier falls away to the right and scree drops to the left. The ridge terrain requires careful foot placement on loose rock. Several rock gendarmes (tower-like formations) block the direct line — all are bypassed on the right side by traversing on stable rock ledges.

Summit ridge and crampon section. As the ridge narrows further, expect snow and ice patches depending on the season. Crampons may be required for the final section where the ridge intersects the glacier edge. The exposure here is real — the Molodezhnyi Glacier drops steeply to one side, with a clear view down to the Glaciological Station T-1 far below. Your guide fixes rope on the most exposed sections.

Summit (4,147 m). The summit ridge is broad enough for a small group to stand together. The panorama is one of the finest in the entire Tuyuk-Su area: Pik Komsomola, Pik Sovetov (4,317 m), Pik Tuyuk-Su, Pik Zoi Kosmodemyanskoi, and — turning south — the peaks visible from Peak Turan and Peak Karniznyi. The Tuyuk-Su Glacier sprawls below, with the Alpingrad hut visible as a speck.

The overnight option. For groups who bivouac on the summit ridge: sunset at 4,150 m is extraordinary — the shadow of Molodezhnaya stretches across the glacier as the city lights of Almaty appear on the northern plain. Temperatures drop below -10°C overnight even in July/August. Sunrise illuminates the entire eastern ridge of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. This is the experience that defines the climb.

Descent. Retrace the ridge route back to camp, pack up, descend through Kumbel-su, over the col, and down through Shukur gorge to the Alpine Rose area. Vehicle transfer to Almaty.

Day 2 stats: ~20 km (summit + full descent to trailhead), +730 m / -2,200+ m.
