The site is most famous for its “sun-headed” solar deities — figures with radiating haloes that are among the most distinctive prehistoric images in Central Asia.

Important: Tamgaly / Tanbaly (this UNESCO site, Bronze Age, in the Chu-Ili hills) is a completely different place from Tamgaly-Tas — the Buddhist rock carvings on the Ili River, ~120 km north of Almaty. They are often confused because of the similar name. This tour visits the UNESCO Bronze-Age site.

What to expect at Tamgaly

Tamgaly (officially now spelled Tanbaly, meaning “painted” or “marked place” in Kazakh) was inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 for its dense and exceptionally preserved record of how people lived, worshipped, and depicted their world over more than three thousand years. The carvings cluster in the canyons of a small, dry range, with the densest concentration — and the most famous images — in the central gorge.

The petroglyphs depict hunting scenes, animals (ibex, deer, horses, bulls), warriors and chariots, dancing figures, and the celebrated anthropomorphic “sun-gods” — humanlike figures whose heads are surrounded by rays, thought to represent solar deities worshipped by Bronze-Age communities. Around the carvings, archaeologists have identified ancient altars, settlements, and burial grounds (stone cists and cromlechs), making Tamgaly not just a rock-art gallery but a complete ancient sacred landscape.

The setting is quiet, semi-desert, and rolling — a contrast to the dramatic canyons and mountains of the Almaty area. The appeal here is cultural and contemplative: walking among carvings made by people who stood on the same ground three thousand years ago.

Detailed itinerary

Drive from Almaty to Tamgaly (3.5–4 hours)

Departure from your Almaty hotel in the morning. The route heads west on the Almaty–Bishkek highway, then turns north into the Chu-Ili steppe after roughly 90 km. The final 15–20 km to the site are on a rough dirt road (a higher-clearance vehicle is preferable, especially after rain).

The drive crosses classic Kazakh steppe — grazing sheep and horses, wide horizons, and the occasional shepherd’s settlement.

Guided walk through the petroglyph canyons (2–3 hours)

From the site entrance (a museum-reserve with a small visitor area), a marked trail leads through the canyons past the main petroglyph groups. Your guide interprets the images — distinguishing Bronze-Age carvings from later Saka, Turkic, and medieval additions, and explaining the famous sun-deity figures and the ritual landscape around them.

The walking is gentle (a few kilometres on uneven ground), with the central canyon holding the highest-density and most photogenic panels. Allow time for photography — the carvings show best in the lower, angled light of morning or late afternoon.

Return to Almaty (3.5–4 hours)

Drive back to the city, arriving in the evening.

A guided day tour from Almaty to the Tamgaly (Tanbaly) petroglyphs — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Chu-Ili mountains, roughly 170 km northwest of the city, where around 5,000 rock carvings spanning from the Bronze Age (2nd millennium BCE) to the early 20th century are concentrated in a series of canyons.

[15,12

post-3713","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kazakhstan","category-hiking

Tamgaly (Tanbaly) Petroglyphs Tour from Almaty - UNESCO Bronze-Age Rock Art Day Trip

<meta name="description" content="Guided day trip to the UNESCO Tamgaly (Tanbaly) petroglyphs - ~5,000 Bronze-Age carvings including the famous sun-headed deities, 170 km from Almaty.
