Issyk: the drive-up lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lake Issyk<\/a> sits at about 1,760 m, 70 km east of Almaty, and you can drive to its shore – the 17 km mountain road above the town of Esik is asphalted and fine for an ordinary car (closed during avalanche season, roughly March-April). Born of a rockfall ten thousand years ago, nearly destroyed by the catastrophic 1963 mudflow, restored by an artificial dam – the story is half the reason to come. The other half is turquoise water against spruce forest, picnic spots, and the Golden Man museum in Esik town on the way. The easiest entry on this list, and the right one if your group spans three generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Almaty Lake: the icon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The one on every postcard. Big Almaty Lake<\/a> lies at 2,511 m, 15 km from the city edge – but since the road closed to private cars in 2020, the last 7 km are on foot (or start from the Ayusay visitor centre). Count on 2.5-3 hours up along the road or the pipeline path, 14 km round trip, about 850 m of gain. From December the lake usually freezes; catch it in November for the sharpest contrast of blue water and white peaks. Bring your passport – it is a border zone – and know that swimming is banned: this is Almaty’s drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kolsai: three lakes on a staircase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kolsai lakes<\/a> are 300 km from Almaty in the Kungei-Alatau range – a weekend trip, usually combined with Kaindy and Charyn Canyon. Three lakes step up the valley at 1,800, 2,250 and 2,700 m. The first is a 30-minute forest walk from the parking (horses and shuttle available May-October); the second is the best half-day hike; the third is for the fit. Easy trekking, picnics, horse riding, even skating on the ice in winter – this is the gentlest “real mountains” destination in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaindy: the sunken forest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lake Kaindy<\/a> is the strange one: a 1911 earthquake dammed the gorge, drowned a spruce forest, and left bleached trunks rising from clear water that never warms past +4-6 \u00b0C. It sits at 2,000 m near Saty village, about 300 km from Almaty – the last 12 km are a rough mountain track with two river fords, so you want a proper 4WD or a local driver. It is 400 m long, 150 m wide and up to 20 m deep, and there is no accommodation at the shore – plan it as a day visit from Saty or as part of the Kolsai loop, and budget for the national park eco-fee at the checkpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manshuk Mametova: the high one above Shymbulak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now the walking gets serious. The route to Manshuk Mametova lake<\/a> starts from the Shymbulak<\/a> side and climbs past the Mynzhylki<\/a> plateau and the weather station toward Alpingrad, then up the moraine – 15 km round trip, 10-12 hours, about 1,300 m of gain, with the lake at roughly 3,200 m. The trail is marked and readable even in winter, and in early winter, before the ice takes it, the water holds an unreal sky-blue against fresh snow. A serious day out that rewards every step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titov Lakes: the acclimatisation classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Titov Lakes<\/a> route is the full mountain day: about 20 km and 1,500 m of gain over 10-12 hours, crossing the 3,200 m Titov pass. Start from Shymbulak (2,280 m) through the Tuyuk-Su valley – past the alpine camp, the climbers’ memorial and a spring where you can refill water – up to the pass, then descend loose scree to the lakes. The path out runs down the Gorelnik valley past the Eagle’s Nest<\/a> and the Gorelnik waterfalls<\/a>. A gentler variant starts from the Gorelnik visit centre<\/a> instead. Steep sections, scree and boulder-hopping: trekking boots, warm layers, real food. Hiking at 2,900-3,200 m also makes this the classic acclimatisation route before bigger peaks. June to October; beyond the Eagle’s Nest the route is snowbound in winter and avalanche-prone in spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One more tarn cluster deserves a mention here: Lake 13<\/strong> under Sovetov peak, reached through the wild Kumbelsu valley – the same altitude class as Titov with even fewer people. It has its own full route guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kazachyi Lakes: the wild ones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The remotest entry: two alpine lakes at 3,220 and 3,320 m in the headwaters of the South Kazachka river, above the Kaskelen valley. There is no marked trail. One route climbs from the second Kaskelen barrier over a 2,500 m ridge and the Aidarys pass (2,800 m); the other follows the river through birch groves and raspberry thickets where the path repeatedly disappears. Both are two-day undertakings through genuinely wild country, the area requires a border-zone permit, and border patrols do check.
