Almaty sits 20-30 km from real mountains, and the city’s favourite ritual is the weekend hike. These five routes are the ones locals actually walk – ordered from a half-day warm-up to full twelve-hour days. A word before the list: none of these should be underestimated. Weather turns fast here, spring brings avalanche risk to several of these valleys, and every year the rescue service collects people who treated a “popular trail” casually. From the Medeo cable-car base station (one stop before the rink), loop behind the information centre, cross the footbridge into the birch grove, and a well-marked trail climbs to Serkebay mountain<\/a> with the Medeo gorge unfolding behind you. Picnic spots all the way up; simple enough for older children; locals also run it as a training route. Strong walkers can extend over the Small Kim-Asar pass, descend through Kim-Asar gorge<\/a> and come out at Medeo<\/a> – a satisfying horseshoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
