Preparation, telling the right people, basic kit and – since 2025 – a legal registration step most foreign visitors have never heard of. This guide covers all of it, written by people who walk these mountains for a living.

Route registration is now the law (eQonaq)

Kazakhstan introduced mandatory route notification in 2025 (Ministry of Emergency Situations order No. 363 of 27 August 2025): anyone travelling through mountainous, hard-to-reach, water or cave terrain must notify the regional MES office of their route in advance. That includes ordinary hikes in the Almaty mountains.

Registration goes through the eQonaq system (website or mobile app) or by email to the territorial MES office, and states: your name and contacts; the route – start, end, length, overnight and rest points; and for groups, every participant’s details and phone numbers. Rescuers register the notification and know where to look if you do not come back.

How to prepare properly

Plan the route in advance. Study the terrain, the elevation change, realistic timing up and down, and the weather window. Use offline maps. Never head out “to see where it goes”.

Assess your group’s fitness honestly. “Easy” routes routinely take far longer than planned – your day is set by the slowest member.

Equip for the mountain, not the forecast:

Footwear with real grip – trekking boots appropriate to the season.

Layered clothing: base layer, fleece, wind/rain shell (down in the cold months).

Sun protection: glasses, SPF, a hat – the sun at altitude is not the city sun.

Water: at least 1 litre per person on a short route, plus an untouchable 0.5-1 L reserve, and food.

Navigation: a map, a phone with offline GPS apps, a compass.

First aid kit, whistle, headlamp.

Communication: a fully charged phone and a power bank; a satellite tracker for remote areas.

Who to tell, and what to do when it goes wrong

Before you go: family or friends get your route, group list, everyone’s phone numbers and your expected return time. The rescue service gets your eQonaq notification (or a 112 call for short-notice plans).

If you are running late: contact your check-in person the moment you have signal – they can start the procedure and pass on your last known position.

If you are lost or in trouble: stay where you are if it is safe – a stationary person is far easier to find. Signal: three short whistle blasts, a torch, bright clothing. Try to get coordinates out by any channel that works.

What actually goes wrong in the Almaty mountains

The local accident patterns, from the rescue statistics and our own years on these trails:

Weather flips. The Zailiysky Alatau changes in minutes – cloud, wind, sudden precipitation – at any time of year.

Improvised routes. The classic accident starts with “let’s go up one way and down another” without preparation. Most lost-hiker calls begin exactly like this.

Cold injuries in summer. Hypothermia and frostbite happen on “warm” hikes because nobody packed a warm layer. Always carry one.

Dry water sources. Springs can be absent, frozen or inaccessible. Carry your water; never depend on finding it.

Solo hikers. Statistically the highest-risk group and the most common emergency category. Go with at least one partner, register your route, and keep solo trips out of remote terrain.

Ignoring your body. Fatigue, poor sleep, hunger, dehydration – and never start a route under the influence.

And when you are safely down: close the loop – tell the same service and your people that you are back, or that plans changed.

Safety FAQ

Is eQonaq registration really mandatory?

Yes – since August 2025 it is a legal requirement for travel in mountainous and hard-to-reach terrain. It also directly improves your odds: rescuers know where to search.

Can I hike alone near Almaty?

Technically yes; statistically it is the riskiest way to be in these mountains, and most emergencies involve solo hikers. The MES strongly recommends a minimum of two. If you do go alone, stay on popular routes and register.

How much water should I carry?

1-1.5 litres per person for a short route (4-6 hours); 2+ litres plus a reserve for long days. Do not count on streams – and do not drink from them untreated; even clear water here can carry bacteria. Filter or boil, or carry your own.

What should I do if I get lost?

Stop. Do not panic-walk. Stay put if it is safe, signal (three short whistle blasts, torch, bright clothing), and try to send coordinates. A stationary target is found; a moving one is chased.

Does mobile coverage work in the mountains?

Patchily. The popular areas – Medeo, Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake – have signal; remote gorges do not. Note the last spot where your phone worked – it matters if you need to backtrack to call.

What is the three-layer system?

Base layer moves sweat off your skin; mid layer (fleece or down) holds warmth; shell blocks wind and rain. It works in every season here – and even in July you carry all three, because at altitude the temperature falls and the weather turns fast.

When should I start a hike?

Summer: 7-8 in the morning, banking daylight. Winter: earlier still – darkness comes fast. Plan to be down before dark, always.

The numbers that matter

112 – the unified emergency number, works from any phone with any signal.

eQonaq – route registration, app and website.

Almaty rescue service contacts – on our rescue page.

Precautions are not what limit you in the mountains – they are what let you go further. If you would rather have all of this handled – kit list, route judgment, a guide who has seen the weather turn a hundred times – that is what we do.

Safety in the mountains around Almaty starts long before the
