Nobody starts on a graded alpine route. In Almaty the path runs in stages: weekend hikes that need no special gear – Kok-Zhailau<\/a>, Boukreev<\/a>, Furmanov<\/a> – then longer, wilder days like Kumbel<\/a>, Pamyat<\/a>, Mynzhylki<\/a> and Big Almaty Peak<\/a>, where signal disappears, company thins out, and navigation and stamina start to matter. Then summits like Heroes of Panfilov<\/a>, Turist<\/a> or Titov<\/a>. And then, if the pull is real – alpinism proper. Here is how that last step actually works in this city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where hiking ends and alpinism begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Routes here are either ungraded (hiking, however hard) or graded 1A-6B on the CIS alpine scale – our grades guide<\/a> unpacks the whole system. The practical line is simple: 1A summits<\/strong> like Heroes of Panfilov from the Manshuk Mametova pass, or Fizkulturnik, are still done entirely on foot – careful foot placement, sensible spacing, a helmet never hurts. From 1B upward, technical gear and training are mandatory.<\/strong> On Amangeldy’s 1B, the approach eats most of the day and the technical section takes 1-2 hours – but that section involves placing protection, climbing roped and abseiling off. It is the route locals traditionally climb for the “Alpinist of Kazakhstan” badge, and the season-opener that tells you honestly where your level is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dangerous moment in every mountain career is right after the first 1A goes well: you feel strong, and the next grade looks close. Do not take a graded route on by yourselves. The whole question is how you get taught – and Almaty offers two roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Club sections vs commercial climbs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sections<\/strong> (sport clubs) lend you communal gear, run weekday theory and fitness training plus weekend sessions on real terrain, and – crucially – make you<\/em> do the work on the mountain: placing gear, building anchors, making decisions. Their goal is a climber who can rely on their own skills. Commercial climbs<\/strong> are pay-per-summit: instructors fix the lines, place the protection and shepherd groups of up to ten per guide. You will stand on more summits faster; you will learn less per summit. Commercial outfits increasingly offer add-on skills sessions, but regularity is what cements skills, and that is the sections’ home ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
