Fishing around Almaty means lowland water. The mountains themselves offer almost nothing legal to fish: most lakes sit inside Ile-Alatau National Park under closure or heavy restriction, and Big Almaty Lake<\/a> is the city’s drinking supply – approaching the water at all is prohibited. The real fishing is north and east of the city: the Kapshagay reservoir, the Ili river and Bartogay. Here is where to go, where you must never cast, and the 2026 closure dates and rules that carry real fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rules and closure dates are set by annual ministry orders and change every year – the data below is current for 2026; check with the territorial fisheries inspectorate before travelling.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to fish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kapshagay reservoir<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The region’s main fishing water, 70-80 km from the city: zander, carp, wels catfish, snakehead, bream, crucian, vobla, occasionally pike. Free public stretches of the reserve fund coexist with paid pontoons on assigned sections. The one predictable drawback: the convenient shores – around Shengeldy and the pumping stations – pack out in summer. The further from an easy drive-up, the emptier the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bartogay reservoir<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

About 190 km east, past the Assy turn-offs – further and far quieter than Kapshagay, with a backdrop that manages mountains and semi-desert at once. Carp, crucian and naked osman; some sources also mention trout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ili river<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Grass carp, common carp, snakehead and zander, plus catfish, asp and perch – summer is prime, when the water settles. The Ili is also the scenic option: the river runs through steppe past the Tamgaly-Tas rocks<\/a>, and a fishing day pairs naturally with the sights. Mind that the Ili carries longer and more fragmented closure windows than Kapshagay – see the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trout farms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rainbow trout does live in the foothills, but wild trout water mostly falls under park rules. The dependable option is the commercial trout farms near Almaty and around Esik: pay per kilo caught plus rod hire, guaranteed result. The family format – for people who want fish more than fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
