For hikers, its attraction is different: a direct, honest couloir route from the Mynzhylki plateau that delivers a real 3,600er in a day, no ropes required – if you respect two hazards we will be very specific about.

The route, turn by turn

Start at the Mynzhylki weather station. Walk back down the valley about 500 m to the marker posts on the left side.

Turn right into the big couloir – Maria’s summit sits up and to the left. Climb the couloir keeping toward its left side from about halfway.

Stay near the left wall – but do not climb onto it, however inviting it looks. And the moment you approach the peak’s wall itself: rockfall alert. Helmets are not paranoia here.

Follow the wall almost to the saddle. Where the wall trends left, you go straight to the saddle, then west up the scree.

Ignore the gendarmes. The rock towers on the ridge will call to you; they are not today’s objective. The scree line leads directly to the summit.

From the top: the whole Tuyuk-Su amphitheatre – Oktyabrenok, Abay, Khrishatogo and the glacier country – with 28 Panfilov Heroes across the cirque for your next ambition.

Winter notes – read before a cold-season attempt

The Shymbulak-Mynzhylki road closes in winter and access above may involve a document check with the rescue post – plan the extra time and carry ID.

The Bastiony section of the approach sits under three known avalanche release zones on its left side. Cross it alert and spaced, and only in stable conditions.

Deep, wet spring-type snow above 3,000 m turns the day upside down – our own party once switched objectives from 28 Panfilov Heroes to Maria precisely because the snow said no. Listening to it is the skill.

Sun at altitude bakes even in deep winter – carry sun protection and expect to strip to a base layer in the couloir on a clear day.

Maria is a walker’s summit by grade but an alpine environment by temperament.
