{"id":3904,"date":"2026-08-11T14:13:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T11:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zabugorshiki.com\/en\/?p=3904"},"modified":"2026-08-11T14:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T11:17:25","slug":"bartogai-reservoir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zabugorshiki.com\/en\/bartogai-reservoir\/","title":{"rendered":"Bartogai Reservoir: Turquoise Water at the Foot of the Assy Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every driver who crosses the <a href=\"\/en\/assy-plateau\/\">Assy Plateau<\/a> east to west ends the day the same way: dropping out of the grasslands down a switchback track until a sheet of improbable turquoise appears between bare hills. That is <strong>Bartogai<\/strong> &#8211; a reservoir on the Chilik river some 170-plus km from Almaty by road, and the most underrated photo stop in the region precisely because almost nobody comes here on purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bartogai is a working reservoir, built in the early 1980s where the Chilik (Shelek) river leaves its mountain canyon. Its job is irrigation: it feeds the Great Almaty Canal, the artery that waters the fields between here and the city. At full pool it spreads across roughly 14 square kilometres; by late summer the level can drop dramatically, exposing wide terraces of pale shoreline that make the water look even bluer. The setting is pure contrast &#8211; milky-turquoise water, dry canyon walls, steppe rolling away to the north, and the snow line of the Kungey Alatau far to the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it&#8217;s worth the detour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The colour.<\/strong> Glacial sediment gives the water a saturated turquoise that photographs like the Mediterranean lost in the steppe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The emptiness.<\/strong> No resorts, no jet skis, no entry booth &#8211; just wind, water and the occasional shepherd. It is the anti-Kapchagay (<a href=\"\/en\/kapchagay-lake\/\">that lake<\/a> has the beaches; this one has the silence).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The birds.<\/strong> The canyon mouth and shallows attract raptors and waterfowl; golden eagles patrol the cliffs above the dam. Bring binoculars.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The position.<\/strong> It sits at the junction of three of the region&#8217;s best days out: the Assy loop, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsay road all pass within striking distance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting there: two very different roads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The easy way<\/strong> &#8211; asphalt via the Kulja highway to Shelek village, then a local road south to the dam. Around 3 hours from Almaty, passable in any car, open most of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The proper way<\/strong> &#8211; the jeep loop: up the Turgen gorge past the waterfalls, across the <a href=\"\/en\/assy-plateau\/\">Assy Plateau<\/a> beneath the observatory domes, then down the long descent to the reservoir and out through Shelek. It is one of the great one-day drives near Almaty and the route we run on our <a href=\"\/en\/4wd-jeep-tours-almaty\/\">4WD tours<\/a>. The plateau crossing is realistically July to September; the descent track demands a real off-road vehicle and a driver who has done it before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No infrastructure.<\/strong> No shops, caf\u00e9s or toilets &#8211; carry everything, pack out everything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swimming<\/strong> is possible in high summer but the water stays cold and the bottom drops fast near the dam; enter only on the gentle terraces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camping<\/strong> on the shore terraces is superb on calm nights &#8211; and the dark sky out here is genuinely black (see our <a href=\"\/en\/stargazing-almaty\/\">stargazing guide<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wind<\/strong> funnels down the Chilik canyon most afternoons; peg the tent properly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combining:<\/strong> with an early start, Bartogai pairs with <a href=\"\/en\/charyn\/\">Charyn Canyon<\/a> in a single long day &#8211; the Valley of Castles is about an hour further east.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bartogai is the kind of place a guidebook skips and a driver remembers.
