The route is graded <a href=\"https:\/\/zabugorshiki.com\/en\/climbing-grades-explained\/\">1B<\/a>: a long, steep ascent over boulder fields to a pass and a short ridge to the summit, with no technical climbing. It&#8217;s a high, demanding day rather than a technical one, and the whole way up you look at Korona, Free Korea (Svobodnaya Koreya) and Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak, the big walls that made Ala-Archa famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two days are enough from Bishkek: on the first you walk up to the hut, on the second you climb to the summit and come all the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to be confused with <a href=\"https:\/\/zabugorshiki.com\/en\/peak-uchitel\/\">Peak Uchitel (4,045 m) in the Almaty mountains<\/a>, a 2A rock climb we also run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trip facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Peak:<\/strong> Uchitel, 4,530 m<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Ala-Archa National Park, Kyrgyzstan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grade:<\/strong> 1B<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 2 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Day 1:<\/strong> park entrance \u2192 Ratsek hut, about 6.6 km and about 1,200 m of ascent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Day 2:<\/strong> Ratsek hut \u2192 summit, about 2.5 km and about 1,160 m of ascent, then down to the park entrance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start and finish:<\/strong> Bishkek<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accommodation:<\/strong> 1 night at the Ratsek hut (3,350 m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Season:<\/strong> June to September; spring and autumn climbs in winter conditions on request<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detailed itinerary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1: Bishkek \u2192 Ratsek hut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early pickup in Bishkek and the drive to Ala-Archa, about 1 hour, with a stop for supplies on the way. From the park checkpoint the electric shuttle takes us to the trailhead at the end of the road. The trail climbs to the Tepshi plateau and then follows the moraine of the Ak-Sai glacier to the hut. It&#8217;s a good trail with no technical sections: 3-4 hours at an easy pace. The trail to Korona and Free Korea runs along it, and the seracs are as impressive as the peaks above. Eat even if you don&#8217;t feel like it: food is your best defence against altitude sickness, and the route stays in the shade for most of the morning. Almost straight away we leave the main trail and climb a steep slope to the left. In early summer much of it is under snow, which many climbers find easier going. After lunch we pack up and walk down to the park entrance, about 1.5 hours, and drive back to Bishkek, arriving in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who this climb is for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need technical climbing experience, but this is a serious day: you start at 3,350 m, climb about 1,200 m to 4,530 m and then descend more than 2,000 m to the park entrance. You should be comfortable on long, steep days in the mountains, and ideally you&#8217;ve been above 4,000 m before. <a href=\"https:\/\/zabugorshiki.com\/en\/peak-komsomolets-ala-archa\/\">Peak Komsomolets (4,204 m)<\/a> in the same park is a good warm-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good to know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weather and the summit.<\/strong> Your guide sets the turnaround time and will turn the group back if the weather, the conditions or the pace make it unsafe to continue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Ratsek hut.<\/strong> Simple bunk beds, no central heating (electric heaters for an extra fee) and a small bar selling drinks, snacks and boiling water. We book beds in advance; if the hut is full on your dates, we sleep in tents next to it, which we provide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sleeping bag.<\/strong> Nights at 3,350 m are cold even in summer. Bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of about -10 \u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What to bring.<\/strong> Mountaineering boots or stiff hiking boots, thermal underwear, a fleece, a down jacket, a waterproof jacket and trousers, light gloves and warm mittens, a hat, a buff, a headlamp, sunglasses and sunscreen.
