Description
Peak Amangeldy (3,999 m) is the single most popular alpine summit in the Zailiyskiy Alatau — and it misses the four-thousander threshold by a single metre. Named after Amangeldy Imanov, a leader of the 1916 Central Asian revolt against Russian conscription, the peak has two routes: the standard 1B (rock scramble via the north ridge from Amangeldy Pass) and the harder 2A Gorbunov route (walls, knife-edges, rappels, and a technical key section).
First ascent: 1939 by V.M. Zimin’s group — the same Zimin who led the 1935 Komsomol Alpiniad on Almaty Peak and the 1935 Talgar SW summit expedition. Every December 22, Almaty’s bravest climbers gather at the Tuyuk-Su Memorial for the traditional winter ascent of Amangeldy — a beloved annual tradition.
Your guide’s choice of route (1B vs 2A) depends on your experience. The 1B is a natural next step after Khrishatogo. The 2A is a genuine test piece with real exposure.
