Description
A guided day hike to Peak Turan (3,970 m) — a near-four-thousander sitting on the ridge between Tourist Peak (3,954 m) and Peak Karniznyi (4,017 m) in the Big Almaty spur of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. Turan is the middle summit of a ridgeline that offers one of the finest high-altitude traverses near Almaty — three peaks above 3,950 m in a single day from the Cosmostation.
The peak has a peculiar identity: Soviet-era maps listed it simply as “unnamed peak 3970 m.” It has since acquired two unofficial names — IYaF (Институт Ядерной Физики / Institute of Nuclear Physics) and Turan (named in 2006 when faculty from Almaty’s Turan University climbed it and christened it after their institution). Neither name is officially registered. The peak’s anonymity is part of its character — this is the summit that serious Almaty hikers know but guidebooks don’t mention.
What to expect
Peak Turan is most naturally reached as an extension of the Tourist Peak hike. From the Cosmostation at Dzhusaly-Kezen Pass (~3,340 m), you first ascend Tourist Peak (2.6 km, +614 m). From Tourist Peak’s summit, the ridge continues southeast for 1.7 km to Turan — a further 30 minutes to one hour of ridgeline walking with a modest additional gain of ~16 m (Tourist Peak is actually 16 m lower than Turan, despite appearing similar from a distance).
The northern ridge connecting the two peaks is not technical — the terrain mirrors Tourist Peak’s scree and rock, with broad views opening on both sides. To the northeast: the Cosmostation and Big Almaty Lake below. To the south: the ice-capped main ridge of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. The route to Peak Karniznyi (4,017 m) is visible continuing along the ridge to the southwest — though Karniznyi’s NE ridge is significantly steeper and rockier.
From the summit of Turan, the panorama includes Almaty-Alagir, Satpayev/Sovetov (4,317 m), Peak Molodaya Gvardiya (4,400 m), Tourist Peak, Peak Karniznyi, and — of course — the city of Almaty on the northern plain.
The three-peak traverse
The strongest way to experience Turan is as part of the Tourist–Turan–Karniznyi traverse — three summits above 3,950 m in ascending order along the ridge from the Cosmostation:
- Tourist Peak (3,954 m) — 2.6 km from Cosmostation
- Peak Turan (3,970 m) — 1.7 km further along the ridge
- Peak Karniznyi (4,017 m) — continues SW along the ridge (steeper, more committing)
The full traverse is a demanding day from the Cosmostation (or a 2-day trip with a night at the Cosmostation hut). The first two peaks are straightforward ridge walking; Karniznyi adds difficulty with its steep NE approach.
For clients who want just the Tourist–Turan pair: this is a natural extension that adds 30–60 minutes and 16 m of altitude to the Tourist Peak day hike, with the psychological bonus of standing on a higher summit.
Why book this guided hike?
Navigation. The ridge between Tourist Peak and Turan is unmarked. In cloud or wind, the featureless scree is disorienting. Your guide knows the line.
The traverse option. If conditions and fitness allow, your guide can extend the day to include Karniznyi (4,017 m) — crossing the four-thousander threshold. This decision is made on the ridge, in real time, based on weather, daylight, and group condition. A guide makes this dynamic call; solo hikers typically don’t attempt it.
Altitude. 3,970 m with sustained time above 3,500 m. Your guide monitors for altitude symptoms and manages pace.

Our guide was incredible - he adjusted the pace perfectly for our group and knew exactly where to stop for the best photos. The whole experience felt effortless, like everything was taken care of before we even thought to ask.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
