Gorelnik Waterfalls: Eagle’s Nest Adventure
Experience the adventure of a lifetime in the breathtaking landscapes of Kazakhstan
Overview
Detailed Description
Nestled in the stunning Gorelnik Gorge in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Gorelnik Gorge is a nature lover’s paradise. It features two breathtaking waterfalls: the Lower (small) and Upper (large) Gorelnik Waterfalls. This serene spot offers a perfect getaway for hikers looking to explore the great outdoors without venturing too far from civilization.
Gorelnik Waterfalls
The Lower Gorelnik Waterfall, standing at around 5 meters tall, is just the beginning of the adventure. The Upper Gorelnik Waterfall, a majestic sight at approximately 20 meters high, consists of three cascading tiers. These waterfalls are formed not by the Gorelnik River itself but by its left tributary, which originates from a spring on the western slope of the right Kumbel Spur.
Route Description
Starting Point: Medeo Ice Rink
Your journey to the Gorelnik Waterfalls begins at the famous Medeo Ice Rink. From here, follow the path past the dam and onto the road leading to the Shymbulak Ski Resort. When you reach a sharp turn, head straight toward the Gorelnik Visitor Center, ensuring you don’t miss the trail that veers right off the asphalt near the benches.
Through the Forest to the Lower Waterfall
The trail takes you through a dense spruce forest before transitioning into the main path leading to the Gorelnik Waterfalls and the Eagle’s Nest rocks. To reach the Lower Waterfall, continue along the trail, crossing the Gorelnik River and following the stream among the rocks. Cross the right tributary of the Gorelnik, and the path will split. Head straight for about 100 meters to reach the Lower Waterfall.
Ascending to the Upper Waterfall
After visiting the Lower Waterfall, return to the fork in the trail and take the path equipped with a handrail. Continue up for another 100 meters until you reach the next fork with a signpost. Turn left to reach the Upper Waterfall, about 100 meters from the junction. This spot is perfect for a rest and a photo session.
Exploring the Eagle’s Nest
Once you’ve soaked in the beauty of the waterfalls, it’s time to head to the Eagle’s Nest, a prominent rock formation. From the second fork, continue up the trail for about 200 meters. The Eagle’s Nest isn’t visible from the resting spot, so walk slightly left, bypassing the rightmost spruce tree, and emerge at the edge of the cliff for a stunning view. To reach the rock itself, take the left trail upwards around the spruce and arrive at the cliff’s edge.
Return Journey
Retrace your steps back to the visitor center along the same path you ascended. The return trip offers a new perspective on the landscape, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty of the Gorelnik Gorge from a different angle.
