Day 1: Medeo & Shymbulak – Warm-Up Day

Easy · Half day · Cable car + walking · From $62/person

Start easy. Take the cable car from Medeo (the world’s highest ice skating rink at 1,691m) up to Shymbulak ski resort at 2,260m. Walk around the mountain base, have lunch with panoramic views, and let your body adjust to the altitude. If you arrived today, this gentle introduction is exactly what you need – mountain scenery without any real exertion.

Evening: Explore Almaty’s Green Bazaar and try Kazakh beshbarmak or lagman for dinner.

Day 2: Big Almaty Lake – The Icon

Easy to Moderate · Half day · 7 km · From $72/person

The turquoise glacial lake at 2,511m that appears on every Kazakhstan travel poster. Drive up the Big Almaty Gorge (our guide handles permits and road access), hike or ride to the lake, and spend time at the viewpoint watching the colors shift with the light. Optional extension to the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory above the lake.

Afternoon: Free time in Almaty. Visit Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, or the Kok-Tobe cable car.

Day 3: Butakovka Waterfalls – Into the Forest

Moderate · Full day · 13.5 km · From $72/person

Your first real hiking day. Follow Butakovsky Gorge through dense spruce forest to two waterfalls – the Lower falls (2 hours in) and the more dramatic Upper falls (another hour beyond). The trail involves river crossings, forest paths, and steady climbing. You’ll feel the mountains properly for the first time.

Tip: If Day 3 feels too ambitious, swap it with the easier Kok-Zhailau plateau hike – similar duration but gentler terrain.

Day 4: Charyn Canyon – A Different World

Easy · Full day · 3-hour drive each way · From $62/person

A welcome change of pace – no mountain hiking today. Drive east through the steppe to Charyn Canyon, Kazakhstan’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Hike down into the Valley of Castles, walk along the Charyn River at the canyon floor, and have lunch among the red rock formations. The landscape is completely different from the green mountains – desert, rock, and silence.

Note: Long driving day (6+ hours total). Bring a book or music for the ride. The scenery along the way is beautiful.

Day 5: Kolsai & Kaindy Lakes – The Pearl of Tien Shan

Moderate · Full day (or overnight) · 15.5 km · From $68/person

The scenic highlight of the week. Drive to Saty village (3-4 hours), then hike to the Lower and Middle Kolsai Lakes – pristine alpine lakes surrounded by spruce forest and mountain peaks. If you add a night in Saty, you can also visit Lake Kaindy with its famous sunken forest of dead spruce trees standing in turquoise water.

Option A: Day trip (long day, you’ll see Lower Kolsai Lake).
Option B: Overnight in Saty village guesthouse (see both Kolsai Lakes + Kaindy). We recommend Option B.

Day 6: Alma-Arasan Hot Springs – Recovery Day

Easy · Half day · 30 min from Almaty · From $60/person

Your legs deserve a break. Drive 30 minutes to Prohodnoe Gorge, take a gentle 30-minute hike through the forest, and soak in natural radon mineral hot springs surrounded by mountains. The warm water works wonders on tired muscles. This is the cheapest tour of the week and the most relaxing.

Afternoon: Spa, shopping, or a long lunch in Almaty. You’ve earned it.

Day 7: Bogdanovich Glacier – The Grand Finale

Easy to Moderate · Full day · 12 km · From $72/person

End the week with something you’ll remember forever – hiking to a real glacier. Take the cable car from Shymbulak to Talgar Pass, then follow a mountain trail to the Bogdanovich Glacier viewpoint. See ice caves, the October Cave, and (on clear days) views stretching across the entire Tien Shan range. Our most popular tour for a reason.

Evening: Celebration dinner in Almaty. You’ve seen lakes, canyons, waterfalls, hot springs, and a glacier in one week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book all 7 days at once?

No – you can book each day trip separately. But if you book 3+ tours, ask us about a multi-day discount.

What if the weather is bad on one day?

We monitor weather closely and will suggest swapping days if needed. Canyon and lake trips work in light rain; glacier and peak hikes need clear weather. Free rescheduling guaranteed.

Can you arrange hotels and airport transfers?

Yes – we can arrange your full trip including airport pickup, hotel recommendations for any budget, and all 7 day tours. Contact us for a complete package quote.

Is this itinerary good for winter?

Partially. Days 1 (Medeo/Shymbulak – skiing!), 2 (Big Almaty Lake – frozen and beautiful), and 6 (hot springs – best in winter) work great. Days 4-5 (Charyn/Kolsai) and 7 (glacier) are weather-dependent. We’ll customize a winter itinerary for you.

What fitness level do I need?

Moderate. The hardest day is Day 3 (Butakovka, 13.5 km with 989m elevation gain). Everything else is easy to moderate. If you can walk 3-4 hours at a steady pace, you’ll be fine. Our guides adjust pace to your group.
