Best Time to Hike Near Almaty

Almaty sits below the Ile (Zailiysky) Alatau, where the hiking season changes dramatically with altitude. This month-by-month guide tells you exactly when to come for high passes, waterfalls, wildflowers, autumn colour or winter snow.

Quick answer

For the high mountains - passes, alpine lakes and four-thousander peaks - come mid-June to mid-September. May and October are ideal for lower trails, waterfalls and autumn colour. Winter (December to February) is for snowshoeing, the ski resorts and hot springs.

Almaty's hiking seasons at a glance

The single biggest factor near Almaty is altitude. The city sits at about 800 m, but the trails climb to 3,000-4,500 m, so the foothills and the high peaks are often in completely different seasons on the same day.

  • Spring (April-May): green foothills, wildflowers and swelling waterfalls. The high passes are still under snow.
  • Summer (June-August): the main season. High passes and four-thousanders open up; waterfalls peak in June; canyons get hot.
  • Autumn (September-October): the sweet spot - stable weather, cool air and golden gorges. The high routes close as the first snow arrives.
  • Winter (November-March): snow up high. Time for snowshoeing, the ski resorts, Medeo skating and hot springs - and serious winter ascents for experienced mountaineers.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single best month to hike near Almaty?

July for the high mountains (warm, snow-free passes) or September for stable weather and fewer crowds. Choose June if you want the waterfalls at full power.

Can you hike near Almaty in winter?

When do the waterfalls flow strongest?

June, at peak snowmelt. By August some of the smaller falls slow to a trickle.

When can I do the multi-day treks and 4,000 m peaks?

Mid-June to mid-September, when the high routes and passes are largely snow-free.

When is it least crowded?
