Almaty sits below the Ile (Zailiysky) Alatau, where the hiking season changes dramatically with altitude. This month-by-month guide tells you exactly when to come for high passes, waterfalls, wildflowers, autumn colour or winter snow.
Quick answer
For the high mountains - passes, alpine lakes and four-thousander peaks - come mid-June to mid-September. May and October are ideal for lower trails, waterfalls and autumn colour. Winter (December to February) is for snowshoeing, the ski resorts and hot springs.

The single biggest factor near Almaty is altitude. The city sits at about 800 m, but the trails climb to 3,000-4,500 m, so the foothills and the high peaks are often in completely different seasons on the same day.
| Month | Conditions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| January | Deep winter; heavy mountain snow, short cold days. | Snowshoeing, Shymbulak skiing, Medeo skating, hot springs |
| February | Cold and snowy; days lengthening. | Skiing, snowshoeing, winter photography |
| March | Late winter; foothills begin to thaw, the high mountains stay under snow. | Low foothill walks, birch groves, early Charyn |
| April | Spring in the foothills; first wildflowers, muddy trails, high passes snowbound. | Charyn Canyon, steppe tulips, easy lower hikes |
| May | Green foothills, wildflowers at their peak, waterfalls rising. | Waterfalls, Kok-Zhailau, Charyn |
| June | Snowmelt peaks: waterfalls at full power, alpine meadows bloom, high trails opening late in the month. | Waterfalls, Big Almaty Lake, first high hikes |
| July | Peak summer; high passes and four-thousanders snow-free; hot in the city and canyons. | Multi-day treks, peak climbs, Kolsai Lakes |
| August | Continued peak season; very warm; smaller waterfalls slow down. | Treks, alpine lakes, high peaks |
| September | The sweet spot: stable weather, cooler air, autumn colour begins late month. | Everything - treks, lakes, photography, fewer crowds |
| October | Autumn colours peak in the gorges; first snow closes the high passes. | Autumn hikes, Kok-Zhailau, lower waterfalls |
| November | Late autumn into early winter; first snows, icy trails up high. | Low walks, Charyn, city days |
| December | Winter returns; ski season opens. | Snowshoeing, Shymbulak, Medeo, hot springs |

Mountain weather in the Ile Alatau changes fast - a warm morning in the city can mean cloud, wind and a 15°C drop at 3,000 m. Always check the forecast before you set out, and the trail's current state for snow, mud or high water.

July for the high mountains (warm, snow-free passes) or September for stable weather and fewer crowds. Choose June if you want the waterfalls at full power.
Yes - snowshoe trails, the Shymbulak ski resort, Medeo skating and warm hot springs are all winter favourites. The standard summer routes to the high passes and summits are snowed in until June, but winter ascents are possible for experienced climbers - just ask.
