One Day in Almaty – a Timed Itinerary from Bazaar to 3,200 m

One day is not enough for Almaty – which is exactly why this itinerary exists. If a layover, a business trip or a tour departure leaves you a single free day, this route threads the city’s greatest hits into one line that starts with breakfast at a Soviet-era bazaar and ends 3,200 metres up a mountain. No car needed: taxis here are cheap and everything below is a short ride apart.

08:30 – Green Bazaar: breakfast among the spice rows

Start where the city eats. The Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar) is Almaty’s food hall of the old school: pyramids of dried apricots and kurt, horse-meat butchers, Korean salad ladies who will feed you samples until you surrender, and honey sellers from the mountains you will be standing on this afternoon. Come hungry, leave with walnuts. An hour here is a crash course in Kazakh, Uyghur, Dungan and Korean food culture.

10:00 – Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral

Two blocks away, the trees of Panfilov Park close over the war memorial’s eternal flame and one of the city’s genuine wonders: Zenkov Cathedral, a candy-coloured Russian Orthodox church raised in 1907 and built of Tian Shan spruce – by legend without a single nail. It survived the earthquake that flattened the city around it. Step inside if it is open; the restored interior is worth the pause.

11:30 – Kok-Tobe: the city from above, gently

Ride the cable car from the top of Dostyk Avenue up to Kok-Tobe hill – the warm-up summit of the day at 1,100 m. Ten minutes of floating over rooftops buys you the full panorama: the grid of the city below, the wall of the Trans-Ili Alatau above. There are cafés for an early lunch, a small funfair, and the obligatory photo with the Beatles bench. Check current cable-car hours before you build the day around it.

13:30 – Medeo: the rink at 1,691 m

Taxi to Medeo, the legendary high-altitude skating stadium in the mouth of the mountains – 200 records were set on this ice. In winter you can skate it yourself; the rest of the year the drama is the setting and the 842 steps of the dam staircase behind it, the local fitness ritual. This is also where the city ends and the mountains begin: from here on you are in the gorge our Terrenkur river path walks down from.

15:00 – Shymbulak by gondola: 2,260 m and up

From Medeo the gondola swings up the gorge to Shymbulak resort. Ride it to the top stations and you are standing above 3,000 m, among peaks, a few hours after breakfast at the bazaar – the compression that makes Almaty unique among big cities. In winter this is Kazakhstan’s flagship ski hill; in summer it is chairlift hiking, glacier views and the best coffee-with-a-panorama in the region. The energetic can walk a stage of the descent – see our Medeo-Shymbulak walking route.

19:00 – Back down: dinner and the evening city

Descend the way you came and finish among the plane trees: dinner around Panfilov Street’s pedestrian stretch or Dostyk Avenue – beshbarmak or plov if you are committing to the theme, excellent coffee and wine bars if not. If your legs still work, the evening promenade along the lit fountains of the old centre is the city at its most likeable.
