Guided Hike to Peak Skalistyi (3,332 m) – The Best View of Big Almaty Lake

A guided day hike to Peak Skalistyi (3,332 m) — the rocky summit towering over the eastern shore of Big Almaty Lake. The peak lives up to its name: “Skalistyi” means “Rocky,” and from the lake side it looks genuinely impregnable — a wall of broken rock rising straight out of the water. The route approaches from the opposite side, via the small Shukur (Chukur) gorge, where a steep trail through meadows and scree leads to a summit panorama that includes the turquoise lake directly below, Satpayev Peak (4,317 m), Ozerny Peak (4,110 m), and the entire Ozernoe valley.

What to expect

The hike begins in the Big Almaty Gorge. Vehicle access is restricted — from the last checkpoint, you walk uphill along the road past the hydroelectric pipeline, then turn into the Shukur gorge near the Alpine Rose hotel. The gorge opens onto the Lunar Meadow (Лунная поляна) — a wide, flower-filled alpine clearing popular for overnight camps. This is where the approach to Skalistyi diverges from the route to Big Almaty Lake.

A small waterfall (~8–10 m) marks the transition from easy trail to serious terrain. Above the waterfall, the route steepens sharply onto loose scree and rocky slopes — the difficult part of the ascent. There is no maintained trail; you follow cairns and boot tracks on unstable ground. Good mountain boots are essential. The final push to the summit involves scrambling over broken rock.

From the top: Big Almaty Lake fills the view to the west — a turquoise oval 700 m below, framed by the peaks of the Ozernoe valley. Satpayev, Ozerny, Choibolsan, and Almaty-Alagir peaks surround you. The summit itself is narrow and rocky — the name is accurate.

Why book this guided hike?
