4WD & Jeep Tours from Almaty

Some of the best landscapes around Almaty sit at the end of a rough mountain track or out across the steppe, far from any paved road. These are the trips where a 4WD earns its keep: high plateaus, desert dunes, sunken-forest lakes and an observatory above the clouds. Every one is a private guided tour in a proper off-road vehicle, with a driver-guide, round-trip transport from your hotel, lunch and professional photos.

Assy Plateau

Highland steppe

Altyn-Emel National Park

Desert & dunes

1-3 days · Off-road piste · from $184

The Singing Dune, the striped Aktau "chalk" mountains and ancient Saka burial mounds, spread across Kazakhstan's largest national park. Distances are huge and the tracks are sandy and remote — a 4WD is essential to link the highlights.

Kaindy Lake 3

Kaindy Lake

Sunken forest

2-3 days · 4WD only · from $95

The surreal lake of drowned spruce trees standing upright in turquoise water. The final stretch from Saty village is a rocky river-crossing track that only a 4WD can manage, which is exactly why it stays so quiet.

Kolsai Lakes & Kaindy

Alpine lakes

2-3 days · Paved + 4WD · from $68

Three stacked alpine lakes in Tien Shan spruce forest, combined with the sunken forest of Kaindy. Sealed road most of the way, then off-road to reach Kaindy and the upper lakes — our most scenically varied multi-day trip.

Charyn Canyon 5

Charyn Canyon

Canyon

Full day · Paved + gravel · from $62

The Grand Canyon of Central Asia — 80 km of red sandstone gorges along the Charyn River. The Valley of Castles is the headline, but a 4WD opens up quieter rim viewpoints and the Moon Canyon track away from the crowds.

Big Almaty Lake 6

Big Almaty Lake

Mountain lake

Half day · 4WD above lake · from $72

A turquoise glacial lake at 2,511 m, the most photographed landmark near Almaty. The road to the shore is paved, but the climb above it to the dam and the high gorge needs a 4WD — and the views back over the lake are the best on the mountain.

Tian Shan Observatory (Cosmostation) 7

Tian Shan Observatory (Cosmostation)

Observatory

Full day · 4WD climb · from $85

An abandoned cosmic-ray station perched at 3,300 m above Big Almaty Lake, reached by a steep switchback track. The off-road climb tops out above the clouds with panoramic views over the lake, the dam and the peaks of the Zailiysky Alatau.

Red Mountains (Bestamak) 8

Red Mountains (Bestamak)

Clay badlands

Full day · Off-road steppe · from $90

Wind-sculpted red and ochre clay hills out on the steppe east of Almaty, glowing at sunrise and sunset. There are no marked roads here — you navigate across open ground by 4WD, which keeps this otherworldly landscape almost entirely to yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Why do these tours need a 4WD?

The destinations sit at the end of rough mountain tracks, river crossings or open steppe with no sealed road — Assy Plateau, Kaindy Lake, the Cosmostation and the Red Mountains in particular. A 4WD with a local driver-guide is the only reliable way to reach them, and it means you don't have to drive or navigate yourself.

What kind of vehicle do you use?

Proper high-clearance 4WDs (typically a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar) driven by an experienced local guide who knows the tracks and river crossings. For larger groups we use more than one vehicle so nobody is squeezed.

Are these tours safe and comfortable?

Yes. The driving is done by guides who run these routes constantly, vehicles are maintained for off-road use, and we plan around weather and track conditions. The roads can be bumpy, but you're always in a capable vehicle with a professional at the wheel.

What's included in the price?

A private English-speaking driver-guide, the 4WD and fuel, round-trip transport from your Almaty hotel, lunch, national park fees and professional photos.

What's the best time of year for off-road tours?

May to October for the high plateaus and lakes, when the tracks are dry and passable. Altyn-Emel and the Red Mountains are best in spring and autumn, as summer on the steppe is very hot. High routes like Assy and the Cosmostation can hold snow into early summer.

Can I combine these into a multi-day trip?

Yes. Kolsai + Kaindy is a natural 2-3 day off-road loop, and Altyn-Emel works as a 1-3 day expedition. We can build a custom itinerary that strings several 4WD destinations together — just ask.
