Bartogai Reservoir: Turquoise Water at the Foot of the Assy Road

Every driver who crosses the Assy Plateau east to west ends the day the same way: dropping out of the grasslands down a switchback track until a sheet of improbable turquoise appears between bare hills. That is Bartogai – a reservoir on the Chilik river some 170-plus km from Almaty by road, and the most underrated photo stop in the region precisely because almost nobody comes here on purpose.

What it is

Bartogai is a working reservoir, built in the early 1980s where the Chilik (Shelek) river leaves its mountain canyon. Its job is irrigation: it feeds the Great Almaty Canal, the artery that waters the fields between here and the city. At full pool it spreads across roughly 14 square kilometres; by late summer the level can drop dramatically, exposing wide terraces of pale shoreline that make the water look even bluer. The setting is pure contrast – milky-turquoise water, dry canyon walls, steppe rolling away to the north, and the snow line of the Kungey Alatau far to the south.

Why it’s worth the detour

• The colour. Glacial sediment gives the water a saturated turquoise that photographs like the Mediterranean lost in the steppe.
• The emptiness. No resorts, no jet skis, no entry booth – just wind, water and the occasional shepherd. It is the anti-Kapchagay (that lake has the beaches; this one has the silence).
• The birds. The canyon mouth and shallows attract raptors and waterfowl; golden eagles patrol the cliffs above the dam. Bring binoculars.
• The position. It sits at the junction of three of the region’s best days out: the Assy loop, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsay road all pass within striking distance.

Getting there: two very different roads

The easy way – asphalt via the Kulja highway to Shelek village, then a local road south to the dam. Around 3 hours from Almaty, passable in any car, open most of the year.

The proper way – the jeep loop: up the Turgen gorge past the waterfalls, across the Assy Plateau beneath the observatory domes, then down the long descent to the reservoir and out through Shelek. It is one of the great one-day drives near Almaty and the route we run on our 4WD tours. The plateau crossing is realistically July to September; the descent track demands a real off-road vehicle and a driver who has done it before.

Practical notes

• No infrastructure. No shops, cafés or toilets – carry everything, pack out everything.
• Swimming is possible in high summer but the water stays cold and the bottom drops fast near the dam; enter only on the gentle terraces.
• Camping on the shore terraces is superb on calm nights – and the dark sky out here is genuinely black (see our stargazing guide).
• Wind funnels down the Chilik canyon most afternoons; peg the tent properly.
• Combining: with an early start, Bartogai pairs with Charyn Canyon in a single long day – the Valley of Castles is about an hour further east.
