Description
Peak Komsomolets (4,204 m) is the closest and most accessible four-thousander in Ala-Archa National Park, an hour’s drive from Bishkek. The route is graded 1B only because the summit is above 4,000 m: there are no technical sections, the whole ascent follows a good trail, and you can climb it in trail runners or light hiking boots. Sun and wind keep the ridge almost free of snow for most of the year.
The tour takes three days from Bishkek. You spend two nights at a hotel by the park entrance and climb the peak in one long day: about 15 km and 2,050 m up and down, 7-8 hours at a steady pace. From the top you look across the whole Ala-Archa range, and on the way down the views are in front of you the entire time.
Not to be confused with Komsomol Peak (4,376 m) in the Almaty mountains, a harder climb we also run.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Bishkek → Ala-Archa
Pickup in Bishkek and the drive to the national park, about 1 hour. Private cars are no longer allowed past the park checkpoint, so for the last stretch we take the park’s electric shuttle to the end of the road. Check in to the hotel, then a short acclimatisation walk along the valley, a gear check with your guide and an early night: we start at 6:00.
Day 2: Summit day
From the hotel we walk up through the forest to the Tepshi plateau, then leave the main trail to the Ratsek hut and climb straight up the ridge. The ridge gets steeper as you go, but the ground stays stable, without the slippery scree that makes so many other peaks hard work.

At about 3,500 m the trail crosses the Fioletovy (Violet) Pass, named for its purple rock, and from there the final section to the summit is in full view. Fresh snow sometimes falls overnight above 3,800 m, even in June, and usually melts by the afternoon.

On top there’s a big Kyrgyz flag, a summit plaque and a view over the whole of Ala-Archa.

The descent is quick, and long stretches are runnable if you feel like it. We’re usually back at the hotel by mid-afternoon for a late lunch and a second night in the park.

Day 3: Return to Bishkek
A slow breakfast, the shuttle back to the checkpoint and the drive to Bishkek. Drop-off in Bishkek around midday.
Who this climb is for
Komsomolets is a good first four-thousander. You don’t need climbing experience or technical gear, but you do need to be comfortable with a long day: about 2,050 m of ascent and the same descent, most of it on steep ground. If you’ve done long day hikes in the mountains and felt fine, you’re ready. Altitude affects everyone differently, so we keep a steady pace and your guide watches for signs of altitude sickness.
If you want to go higher afterwards, Peak Uchitel (4,530 m) and Peak BOKS (4,240 m) start from the Ratsek hut in the same valley.
Good to know
- Weather and the summit. Your guide sets the turnaround time and will turn the group back if the weather, the conditions or the pace make it unsafe to continue.
- The hotel. We book a hotel at the park entrance. If it’s full on your dates, we book the nearest available alternative and confirm it with you before the trip.
- What to bring. Trail runners or light hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, a warm layer, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. In midsummer shorts and a T-shirt are often enough on the summit, but carry the layers anyway. See our hiking gear guide.
- Getting to Bishkek. Bishkek has an international airport (Manas). From Almaty it’s about 4 hours by road, including the land border at Korday.

Did the 2-day Altyn-Emel trip. The Singing Dune at sunset was magical. Our guide handled everything - permits, accommodation, meals. We just showed up and enjoyed. Already planning our next trip with Zabugorshiki.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

I had a great experience, communication was very clear from the beginning to the day my guide Eldar picked me up at the hotel. I did the Big Almaty Circuit with Satpayev peak. My guide was great, and took care of everything. He knows the mountains very well and speaks English. They provided a very good quality tent, mat and sleeping bag! Thanks to the whole team!

So happy I made it to the summit! I loved the trip — I had the best days. Thank you so much.

We went on the 2-day Altyn-Emel tour and it was truly memorable. Our tour guide, Denis, is knowledgeable about the terrain and took us to the best spots, maximizing our time and overall experience. The logistics were also planned and executed perfectly.

I had a great time, it was a beautiful hike across changing terrains. My guide Eldar provided me with the equipment I needed and fantastic homemade food and snacks along the way. Highly recommended.

Denis is a skilful driver, especially on the demanding roads of Altyn-Emel National Park. He knew just when to lend me a hand, and the route he chose was challenging yet fun! The Aktau Mountains are absolutely unique and the views are incredible. I would never have imagined such a stark difference between Shymbulak and Aktau. Thank you for planning this hike for me! Denis also took brilliant drone videos for us. Marvellous! I'm so glad I had you to handle my itinerary and time in Almaty. I appreciate the way you went beyond expectations to meet my requests, like changing hotels and hiking plans, especially when I had difficulties with my previous hotels. Spasibo!

We really enjoyed discovering Peak Manshuk Mametova with our very fun, experienced, young and passionate guide, Danil. He showed us his own trails, we had a good mix of walking, climbing and glaciers, he made the whole experience unforgettable! Thank you so much.

We really appreciate Eldar as a tour guide, who is very experienced and led us to many unique destinations that few tourists know. Also appreciate Eldar for teaching us how to fly a drone and taking photos of us, and ensuring that we are always safe
