Description

Peak Adygene (4,350 m) is one of the most accessible and rewarding summits in Ala-Archa National Park. The route is graded 1B but doesn’t need serious climbing skills: you need to move confidently over rough ground and cope with altitude above 4,000 m. In two days you pass through every zone of the Tien Shan: conifer forest, alpine meadows, three steps carved by an ancient glacier, a high lake and a rocky summit with a view across to Uchitel and Korona.

We camp by Adygene lake, so the summit day starts high and you’re back at the trailhead the same afternoon.

Trip facts

  • Peak: Adygene, 4,350 m
  • Location: Adygene valley, Ala-Archa National Park, Kyrgyzstan
  • Grade: 1B
  • Duration: 2 days
  • Day 1: trailhead → Adygene lake, about 9.3 km and about 1,500 m of ascent
  • Day 2: lake → summit → trailhead, about 14.4 km, about 760 m of ascent and the long descent to the valley
  • Start and finish: Bishkek
  • Accommodation: 1 night in tents by Adygene lake
  • Season: July to September

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek → Adygene lake

Pickup in Bishkek and the drive to Ala-Archa, about 1 hour, with a stop for supplies on the way. The Adygene trail starts just below the old park entrance: we cross the river on a metal footbridge and climb a steep path through conifer forest, which keeps you in the shade on hot days.

After 45-60 minutes we pass the climbers’ cemetery, the trail eases off and we come out of the forest onto alpine meadows. A couple of hours later the meadows give way to the moraine, with more and more rocks underfoot.

Hiker on the alpine meadows of the Adygene valley

The climb to the lake crosses three steps left by an ancient glacier: still a good trail, steep in places and rocky. Above the last step a boulder field leads to the lake, where we pitch camp for the night. A glaciologists’ hut stands on the shore, but it’s locked and not open to visitors.

Day 2: Summit and descent

After breakfast we pack up camp and leave the bags on the moraine, so we don’t have to come back to the lake after the summit and can head straight down the valley.

The main challenge of the route is the climb to the Adygene Pass. The line of the trail is easy to follow, but near the pass there’s a lot of loose rock, so we keep our distance from each other and stop any stones that start to roll. From the pass you look across to the highest peaks around the Ratsek hut, Uchitel and Korona among them.

From the pass the trail to the summit is clear and not technical. In places you’ll use your hands on the rock and skirt a small rock tower. The summit itself is a small rocky outcrop.

The descent to the trailhead takes about 4 hours. On the way back to Bishkek there’s an optional stop for a trout lunch at a café in Kashka-Suu village. We’re back in Bishkek in the evening.

Who this climb is for

You don’t need climbing experience, but you need good fitness: day 1 gains about 1,500 m with a full pack, and day 2 takes you to 4,350 m and back down more than 2,000 m to the trailhead. You should be steady on scree and comfortable on rough, rocky ground.

If you’d like a lighter start, Peak Komsomolets (4,204 m) is a one-day four-thousander in the same park.

Good to know

  • Weather and the summit. Your guide sets the turnaround time and will turn the group back if the weather, the conditions or the pace make it unsafe to continue.
  • Camping. We provide tents and sleeping mats. Bring your own sleeping bag with a comfort rating of about 0 °C; nights by the lake are cold even in July.
  • What to bring. A 35-45 litre backpack, hiking boots or single-layer mountaineering boots for the summit (trail runners are fine for the approach), shorts and trousers, a down jacket, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and sandals for camp. See our hiking gear guide.
  • Getting to Bishkek. Bishkek has an international airport (Manas). From Almaty it’s about 4 hours by road, including the land border at Korday.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

I had a great experience, communication was very clear from the beginning to the day my guide Eldar picked me up at the hotel. I did the Big Almaty Circuit with Satpayev peak. My guide was great, and took care of everything. He knows the mountains very well and speaks English. They provided a very good quality tent, mat and sleeping bag! Thanks to the whole team!

Denis is a skilful driver, especially on the demanding roads of Altyn-Emel National Park. He knew just when to lend me a hand, and the route he chose was challenging yet fun! The Aktau Mountains are absolutely unique and the views are incredible. I would never have imagined such a stark difference between Shymbulak and Aktau. Thank you for planning this hike for me! Denis also took brilliant drone videos for us. Marvellous! I'm so glad I had you to handle my itinerary and time in Almaty. I appreciate the way you went beyond expectations to meet my requests, like changing hotels and hiking plans, especially when I had difficulties with my previous hotels. Spasibo!
