Description

Pila means “saw”, and one look at the serrated crest above the middle reaches of Prokhodnoye gorge explains the name. At 3,780 m, Pila Peak is one of the most scenic summits in the Almaty mountains – grassy slopes and easy rock all the way, no technical climbing – with a summit panorama that collects Big Almaty Peak, Kazakhstan Turist, Alma-Arasan peak and Karniznyi in a single sweep, the city hazing away to the north.

The gorge you climb through

The route starts from the Almarasan (Prokhodnoye) gorge trailhead, easily reached from the city by car or taxi. Prokhodnoye is narrow and steep-sided, and its middle section reads like a greatest-hits list: the Muzhskie Slyozy (“Men’s Tears”) waterfall, the Terra meadow, Alyoshkin bridge, and the turn toward the Cosmostation. Even before the summit push, the approach is one of the better walks in the region.

Pila pairs naturally with the rest of the Prokhodnoye ladder – warm up on Terra, graduate here, and the gorge’s bigger objectives are next door. Pila is classic custom-trip territory – ask us about building the day.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
