The Almaty Mega-Traverse: 30 km, Two Passes, Two Peaks, One Day

Every mountain city has one route that locals use as the measuring stick. In Almaty it is this: Shymbulak → Mynzhylki → Titov pass → Pamyat peak → Titov lakes → Trapetsiya pass → Kumbel peak → Kok-Zhailau → Prosveshchenets. Thirty kilometres, two passes, two summits, and – if you are honest about your pace – a finish in the dark. Our team calls it the hike of the year, and it took us two attempts: the first ended in retreat, the second in a night descent we still talk about. Here is the route, and what it actually asks of you.

The stages

1. Shymbulak → Mynzhylki (~2 h). Pre-dawn start is non-negotiable – take the first transport up to Shymbulak (we book an eco-taxi for ~6 a.m.; build in slack, drivers oversleep) and walk the Tuyuk-Su valley road to the Mynzhylki plateau. Before sunrise the wind through the Tuyuk-Su “gates” can be brutal – the gazebo at the plateau is the warm-up stop. An aspirin at the start helps some people with the fast altitude jump the taxi gives you.
2. Mynzhylki → Titov pass (~1 h from the fork). Dirt road, then the marked fork at the second switchback and the climb to the 3,200 m pass – the route shared with the Titov Lakes day.
3. Titov pass → Pamyat peak. The first summit tag of the day: Pamyat rises directly off the pass. Bag it, come back, drop your heart rate.
4. Pass → Titov lakes. Careful scree descent to the tarns at ~2,900 m – refill water here (a filter bottle earns its keep on this route; the streams are your supply).
5. Lakes → Trapetsiya pass → Kumbel peak. The crux of the day: the traverse over the Trapetsiya pass onto the long Kumbel ridge, and the second summit – Kumbel (3,200 m). By now the kilometres are talking.
6. Kumbel → Three Brothers ridge → Kok-Zhailau → Prosveshchenets. The long unwinding descent over the Kok-Zhailau plateau and down to the Prosveshchenets exit into the city. If you started at dawn and moved well, you finish by headlamp. Plan for it rather than hope against it.

What this route demands

• Fitness for 30 km with ~two passes’ worth of climbing. Our first attempt ended in an honest retreat – treat that as data, not embarrassment. There are multiple bail-out points (back to Shymbulak early on; down Gorelnik from the lakes; down from Kok-Zhailau at the end) – know yours in advance.
• A dawn start and a headlamp finish. Both are part of the design, not a failure mode. Night descent of the final stretch is routine for finishers – fresh batteries, warm layer.
• Water strategy: ~1 L carried plus a filter for the streams; the day is long and the sun at altitude burns hot even when the dawn was freezing.
• All the usual rules, amplified: register the route, tell your people, never solo. This is the route where cutting a corner compounds.
