Description

A guided 2-day climb of Peak Yukon (3,540 m) — a summit on the ridge dividing Kargalinskoe and Aksay gorges in the western Zailiyskiy Alatau. Named after the radio callsign of a local alpinist, Yukon sits in one of the least-visited sectors of the Almaty mountains. The route follows a ridge trail through forest to Dorozhnyi Pass, then climbs exposed rock to a summit defined by glass-smooth granite slabs — rock so polished that any moisture makes the final section unclimbable without a rope.

This is not a trail hike. The summit approach crosses terrain with genuine exposure above two gorges, and the rock character demands dry conditions. For experienced hikers looking beyond the busy Tuyuk-Su and Big Almaty Gorge circuits, Yukon offers something rare near Almaty: a climb on a route that the company’s founder first-ascended solo.

What to expect on the Peak Yukon climb

Kargalinskoe Gorge (Каргалинское, also spelled Kargayly) sits west of the familiar Big Almaty and Prohodnoe gorges. Access is from the lower gorge entrance near Kargalinka village. The gorge itself is wild — the lower trail has been partially destroyed by mudflows, and the upper valley is virtually uninhabited beyond occasional shepherds’ yurts. Ibex (teke) graze openly on the slopes.

Key waypoints:

Forest approach and ridge trail. The route begins in dense forest, then transitions to a well-defined ridge trail running several kilometres along the gorge’s western crest. The ridge walking is pleasant — good trail, open views, steady altitude gain through juniper and then alpine meadow.

Dorozhnyi Pass (~3,100–3,200 m). The ridge trail arrives at Dorozhnyi Pass by midday (early start assumed). This is the overnight camp spot — flat ground with views into the upper Kargalinskoe valley. From here, the major peaks of the Kargalinskaya Podkova (Horseshoe) become visible: Peak Oktyabr (4,141 m), Peak Gigant (4,180 m), Peak Gagarina (4,085 m), and the dramatic pyramid of Peak Pervomayskiy (3,990 m).

Summit climb from the pass. The ascent from Dorozhnyi Pass to Yukon’s summit follows the continuation of the ridge toward the Aksay–Kargalinskoe divide. The terrain transitions from scree to exposed rock. The defining feature of the upper mountain is a band of granite slabs — polished smooth by weathering, with a surface described by climbers as “glass.” In dry conditions, these slabs are climbable with friction technique and careful footwork. When wet, they become genuinely dangerous: a slip on the summit block sends you into either Kargalinskoe gorge on one side or Sekretsay gorge on the other, with no rope to stop a fall.

The summit is narrow and exposed. The panorama is outstanding — you are surrounded by the entire Kargalinskaya Podkova arc of four-thousanders: Oktyabr (4,141 m), Gigant (4,180 m), Gagarina (4,085 m), Ravnovesiya (4,077 m), Uzlovoy Kargalinskiy (4,128 m), and Pervomayskiy (3,990 m). The view is rare because most Almaty hikers never enter this gorge system — these peaks are usually only seen from the distant city skyline, where the “Twins” (Kargalinskiy and Kamenskiy peaks) are a recognisable silhouette.

Descent retraces the ascent route via Dorozhnyi Pass. A snow-filled couloir on the descent side can provide a fast glissade in early season.

Did the 2-day Altyn-Emel trip. The Singing Dune at sunset was magical. Our guide handled everything - permits, accommodation, meals. We just showed up and enjoyed. Already planning our next trip with Zabugorshiki.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
