Description
A guided day hike (or overnight) to Peak Karniznyi (4,017 m) — one of the most accessible four-thousanders in the Almaty mountains. The route approaches through Prohodnoe Gorge (also called Alma-Arasan Gorge), passing landmarks that read like a greatest hits of the Big Almaty Gorge system: the Maiden’s Tears waterfall, Terra Meadow, Alyoshkin Bridge, and — for those who know the area — proximity to the Cosmostation and Tourist Peak (3,954 m).
At 25.5 km round trip with 2,275 m of elevation gain, this is one of the longest and most demanding day hikes in the catalogue. Most guided groups treat it as a very long day (11.5 hours) or split it into an overnight with a camp near the upper moraine.
What to expect
Prohodnoe Gorge is one of the most beautiful approach valleys near Almaty — a narrow canyon with steep walls, geological formations, waterfalls, and dense forest giving way to alpine meadows. The gorge follows the Prohodnaya River upstream from the former Alma-Arasan sanatorium.
Key waypoints en route:
Maiden’s Tears Waterfall — a delicate cascade on the canyon wall, reached within the first hour.
Big Iguzek Stream crossing — a deep ravine carved by seasonal mudflows descending from Big Almaty Peak‘s western slopes. Crossable but requires care; the stream can dry up in summer.
Terra Meadow (Поляна Терра) — a wide alpine clearing at the upper forest boundary, surrounded by spruce. Views of Peak Pila (“Saw Peak”) above. This is the classic overnight camp spot and the junction point for multiple routes — including the approach to Big Almaty Peak via the Dzhusaly-Kezen pass.
Alyoshkin Bridge — a river crossing of the Prohodnaya, connecting Terra Meadow to the routes heading south toward the main ridge.
Above Terra Meadow, the route enters the Moraine Valley — a stark landscape of glacial debris, grey rock, and thinning vegetation. The trail follows the moraine wall for approximately 3 km, gaining altitude steadily. The final ascent to Peak Karniznyi’s summit (4,017 m) involves steep scree and potentially snow patches depending on the season.
The summit view is commanding: the main Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge stretches east-west, with the Prohodnoe valley visible all the way back toward Almaty. To the south: the high glaciated peaks of the main divide, with the Kungey Alatau and — on clear days — the distant shimmer of Issyk-Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan.
Why book this guided hike?
It’s a four-thousander. Crossing the 4,000 m threshold changes the physiological equation — altitude symptoms become a real factor. Your guide monitors the group, manages pace, and knows when to turn around.
25.5 km is a very long day. Time management across 11.5 hours of mountain terrain, with the return to the trailhead before dark, requires experience. The overnight option (camping at Terra Meadow or below the moraine) is the safer format and allows a summit attempt in better morning conditions.
Prohodnoe Gorge navigation. The gorge has multiple trail junctions — routes diverge toward BAP, the Cosmostation, Peak Alma-Arasan, and various passes. Taking the wrong fork costs hours. Your guide knows every junction.

Our guide was incredible - he adjusted the pace perfectly for our group and knew exactly where to stop for the best photos. The whole experience felt effortless, like everything was taken care of before we even thought to ask.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
