Description
A guided 1–2 day hike to Peak Akusticheskiy (3,453 m) — a little-known summit in the Left Talgar gorge, recently renamed Myuztau (Мьюзтау, meaning “frozen mountain”). This is one of those peaks that even most Almaty hikers have never heard of — hidden in a gorge system east of the main Maloe Almatinskoe area, approached through terrain scarred by massive mudflows, and accessed via a steep couloir where the only trail has been made by ibex.
From the summit, the views are exceptional and entirely different from the standard Tuyuk-Su panorama: the vast Ulken Mynzhylky valley stretches south toward the highest peaks of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, including Pik Pushkina, SASHiA, and the Bogatyr massif. The sheer cliff drops on the Talgar side — approximately one vertical kilometre to the valley floor — are breathtaking. And below, the fresh scar of a catastrophic mudflow that destroyed an entire valley meadow serves as a reminder of the forces that shape these mountains.
What to expect on the Peak Akusticheskiy hike
Left Talgar (Левый Талгар) is a major gorge system running parallel to, and east of, the Maloe Almatinskoe gorge. While the Maloe Almatinskoe side (Medeo, Shymbulak, Tuyuk-Su) sees thousands of visitors annually, Left Talgar remains comparatively wild and empty. The standard access from Almaty is via the Talgar Pass (reachable by cable car from Shymbulak) and then descending into the Left Talgar valley — or by driving through the town of Talgar to Solnechnaya Polyana (Солнечная Поляна, “Sunny Meadow”), the main trailhead for the gorge.
Key waypoints:
Solnechnaya Polyana (~1,800 m). The trailhead and campsite at the confluence of the Left Talgar valley. For a 2-day trip, camp here on the first night. For a strong day hike, start at dawn.
Mudflow zone. The approach passes through terrain devastated by a recent mudflow — a subterranean lake burst through the surface, sending a debris flow that obliterated a large forest meadow. The scale is dramatic: what was once a flat, grassy clearing is now a scarred ravine of loose rock and uprooted trees. Your guide navigates through the most stable sections.
The couloir. From the mudflow zone, the route turns up a steep, narrow couloir. There is no human trail — only ibex tracks running in multiple directions across the slope. The terrain is steep grass and loose rock, requiring careful route-finding. The couloir is uncharted territory; the RU article describes it as a place where “no human foot has stepped — only mountain goats.”
Summit (3,453 m). The summit is a rocky viewpoint perched above dramatic cliffs. The panorama includes the entire Ulken Mynzhylky valley — a wide glacial trough running south into the heart of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. Visible peaks: Levyi Bogatyr (in fragments from a massive rockfall), the sharp spire of SASHiA, Pik Pushkina (the tallest in the group), and Kyiragantau hiding behind it. To the north, the city of Almaty shimmers in the heat haze on the plain. The drop toward Left Talgar on the eastern side is approximately 1,000 m — near-vertical cliffs that define the peak’s eastern face.

Our guide was incredible - he adjusted the pace perfectly for our group and knew exactly where to stop for the best photos. The whole experience felt effortless, like everything was taken care of before we even thought to ask.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
