Almaty in Winter: Skating at 1,691 m, Skiing, and Snowy City Days

Winter is when Almaty makes its argument. Few cities anywhere let you skate on a legendary high-altitude rink, ski a 3,200 m mountain, walk to a frozen waterfall and end the evening at the opera – all without leaving town limits by more than half an hour. Here is how a winter trip here actually fits together, from someone who spends the season in these mountains.

The city under snow

• Panfilov Park & Zenkov Cathedral. The snowy avenues of the memorial park frame its jewel – the candy-coloured Zenkov Cathedral, one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world, at its most photogenic against white. The park floods a public rink in winter; entry is free with your own skates.
• Kok-Tobe. The hilltop cable-car ride is arguably better in winter – the city steams below, the mountains glitter behind, and the cafes at the top serve the warming end of the national cuisine.
• The Arbat and its underpasses. Almaty’s pedestrian street runs as an open-air gallery in winter, its underpasses hung with paintings and light installations.
• First President’s Park. The big southern park turns fairy-tale under snow – broad alleys, mountain backdrop, and another free public rink.
• An evening indoors. Almaty’s theatre bench is deep: the Abay Opera and Ballet (1934, the country’s first opera house and an architectural set-piece), the Auezov Kazakh drama theatre (1926), the Lermontov Russian drama theatre (1933), the Sats young-audience theatre (1945) and the puppet theatre (1935). Opera tickets cost a fraction of European prices; dress up and go.

The mountains: pick your intensity

• Skate Medeo. The world’s highest ice rink (1,691 m, built 1972, a museum’s worth of speed-skating records) runs public sessions from early November to late March – mountain air, spring-water ice, and the gorge walls around you. Our Medeo guide has the details.
• Ski. Three resorts within an hour: Shymbulak (20+ km of pistes, season into May – our favourite), family-friendly Oi-Qaragai and budget Ak-Bulak. • Walk to a frozen waterfall. The Butakovka valley walk (1-2 hours, easy, good boots essential) ends at a waterfall locked in ice – a local favourite that tourists mostly miss.
• See Big Almaty Lake in white. The lake freezes from December, its snowfield surface ringed by severe peaks. The road stays closed to cars – it is a 7 km winter walk each way, and worth every step of it.

How to build the trip

The winning format alternates: a mountain day, then a city day to let your legs (and your altitude adaptation) recover. Three to five days covers skating, one resort, one winter walk and the city’s best; a week adds a second resort and a guided route. December and January bring the deepest festive atmosphere and the deepest cold; February and March trade a little magic for friendlier temperatures and the season’s best snow.
