Description
A guided day tour to Bestamak Canyon – a lesser-known canyon inside Charyn National Park, often called the “Little Charyn,” located between the famous Valley of Castles and the Temirlik River at around 943 m elevation. Roughly 8 km long, Bestamak is a miniature version of the main Charyn canyon: the same red-orange and pink sandstone sculpted by water, time, and wind, but almost entirely free of the crowds that fill the Valley of Castles.
What to expect at Bestamak Canyon
“Bestamak” translates from Kazakh as “five isthmuses” — a reference to the narrow passages where the canyon walls close in and the route threads between rock. It is the same geological story as the main Charyn Canyon: ancient lakebed sediments and volcanic layers, carved over millions of years into towers, corridors, and fluted walls. In wet seasons a small stream runs along the canyon floor toward the Charyn River; in dry months it disappears entirely.
What sets Bestamak apart is solitude. The Valley of Castles can see hundreds of visitors on a summer weekend; Bestamak sees a handful. Here you walk the canyon floor in quiet, often spotting wildlife — ibex, gazelle, and, with luck, the elusive Pallas’s cat (manul) — in a landscape that feels genuinely wild. For photographers and travellers who have already seen the main canyon, or who simply want the experience without the crowds, Bestamak is the answer.
Because the sites sit close together, Bestamak is most often combined with the Valley of Castles, the Moon (Yellow) Canyon, and the Black Canyon viewpoint into a single “wild canyons of Charyn” day.
Detailed itinerary
Drive from Almaty toward Charyn National Park (3–3.5 hours)
Departure from your Almaty hotel in the morning. Drive east on the A-351 highway through Shelek toward the Charyn region. The final approach to Bestamak leaves the paved road for a dirt track — a higher-clearance or 4×4 vehicle is preferable, especially after rain. The nearest landmark is the village of Aksay.
Descent into Bestamak Canyon (2–3 hours)
A 4×4 can descend partway into the canyon; from there, a walk of roughly 5 km (about 2 hours) leads through the narrow passages and red-rock formations down toward the Charyn River. The canyon’s twists reveal constantly changing rock shapes and colours — the appeal is the variety packed into a short, quiet walk.
A picnic at the Charyn River at the canyon’s mouth is the usual turnaround point before walking back up.
Optional: Valley of Castles & Moon Canyon
With an early start, the tour can add the main Valley of Castles viewpoint and the lunar landscape of the Yellow (Moon) Canyon — making a full “wild canyons” day that contrasts the crowded headline site with its quiet neighbours.
Return to Almaty (3–3.5 hours)
Drive back west, arriving in the evening (~230 km, ~3 hours from the canyon).

Our guide was incredible - he adjusted the pace perfectly for our group and knew exactly where to stop for the best photos. The whole experience felt effortless, like everything was taken care of before we even thought to ask.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
