Description
A guided one-day climb of Peak 28 Heroes-Panfilovtsev (4,120 m) — a 1B summit in the Azutau group of the Maloalmatinskoe (Malaya Almatinka) gorge, on the western branch of the Maloalmatinsky spur of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. The peak is accessed from Shymbulak ski resort via the Alpingrad basecamp and the Manshuk Mametova pass, and is one of the most historically significant summits in the Almaty mountains.
What to expect on the Peak Panfilovtsev climb
For the people of Almaty, this peak’s name is sacred. It honours the 28 Guardsmen of the 316th (later 8th Guards) Rifle Division — a unit formed in Alma-Ata (now Almaty) in 1941 under General Ivan Panfilov, which became a national symbol for its role in the defence of Moscow during the Second World War. The city’s central park, Zenkov Cathedral’s home, carries the same name, and the peak completes the memorial: the park honours the men, the mountain honours their courage.
The summit was first climbed in 1942 — during the war itself — by cadets of the All-Union School of Mountain Training, which was based in the Maloalmatinskoe gorge to train soldiers for mountain warfare. Since 2012, an annual mass “Alpiniada” (group ascent) takes place every May, dedicated to Victory Day and Defender of the Fatherland Day. In recent years, over 1,000 people have registered to climb the peak in a single day — making it one of the largest organised mountaineering events in Central Asia.
The mountain itself is a genuine 1B alpine objective. Its southern slope is a tangle of steep rock outcrops, couloirs, and scree; its northern face is a snow-and-ice slope dropping toward the Bogdanovich Glacier; and its eastern and western ridges connect it to neighbouring summits — a snow ridge east to Karlytau (4,170 m) and a ridge west to Peak Uchitel and the Uchitel Pass.
Detailed itinerary
Shymbulak to Alpingrad (3–4 hours)
The climb begins at Shymbulak / Chimbulak (2,300 m). Ascend the gravel road past the Memorial to Fallen Mountaineers and the Mynzhylki meteorological station (3,000–3,300 m), continuing to the Alpingrad basecamp (3,450 m) — the traditional staging area for climbs in the eastern Tuyuk-Su cirque.
Most one-day Alpiniada ascents start before dawn from Shymbulak; for a more comfortable trip, we recommend an overnight at Alpingrad to acclimatise, turning this into a 2-day climb.
Alpingrad over the Manshuk Mametova pass (2–3 hours)
From Alpingrad, the route climbs to the Manshuk Mametova pass — and this is the crux of the entire climb. The pass is a steep scree slope of approximately 30–40°, covered in loose “living” rock and dotted with rocky gendarmes. The footing is treacherous: stones shift and slide underfoot, and rockfall is a genuine hazard. Helmets are essential here. Climbers space themselves out so that a dislodged rock has less distance to accelerate before reaching the person below.
This pass is the section that turns a walk into a climb. It is physically demanding and requires careful movement.
Summit ascent (1–1.5 hours)
From the pass, the route follows the ridge to the summit. The final section is moderate but exposed, with snow depending on the season. The summit (4,120 m) carries a commemorative plaque from past Alpiniada ascents.
The summit views are exceptional. From the top you can see Karlytau (4,170 m) immediately east, Peak Komsomol / Nursultan (4,376 m), Peak Manshuk Mametovoi (4,194 m), Peak Molodezhnaya (4,147 m), and Sovetov / Satpayev Peak (4,317 m) — a near-complete panorama of the Tuyuk-Su four-thousanders.
Descent (3–4 hours)
Return via the same route — back over the Manshuk Mametova pass (descending the loose scree requires as much care as the ascent), down to Alpingrad, and back to Shymbulak.
Why book a guided Panfilovtsev climb?
The pass is the danger. The Manshuk Mametova pass is a loose-scree slope where rockfall is the primary hazard. Your guide manages group spacing, identifies the safest line through the shifting rock, and ensures everyone wears a helmet. Independent climbers without this discipline are the ones who get hurt here.
Altitude in one day. Climbing from 2,300 m to 4,120 m in a single day is a significant altitude gain. Your guide monitors the group for signs of altitude sickness and sets a sustainable pace. The 2-day option with an Alpingrad overnight dramatically improves both safety and summit success.
Route-finding above the pass. From the pass to the summit, the route is not obvious — several false lines lead to dead ends on the rocky ridge. Your guide knows the correct line.
The history. This is not just a summit — it’s a memorial. A guide brings the story to life: the Panfilov division formed here in Almaty, the 1942 first ascent by soldiers training for mountain warfare, and the annual Alpiniada tradition. Climbing it with that context is a different experience from simply ticking off a 4,000er.
Avalanche assessment. In winter and spring, the northern slopes and the pass approach carry avalanche risk. Your guide assesses conditions and decides whether the climb is safe on the day.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
