Description

A 2-day guided mountaineering expedition to Peak Molodaya Gvardiya (4,400 m) — the highest summit in the entire Big Almaty Gorge system. This beautiful pyramidal peak stands at the far southern end of the gorge, where the Ozernoe and Kyzylsay valleys meet the main Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge. It is the most remote and least visited major summit accessible from Big Almaty Lake, and reaching it is a genuine mountaineering achievement.

The name “Molodaya Gvardiya” (Young Guard) commemorates a Soviet WWII youth resistance organisation from the Ukrainian city of Krasnodon. The name reflects the peak’s Soviet-era mountaineering heritage — a time when the highest and hardest summits were given the names of heroes.

What to expect

Peak Molodaya Gvardiya sits deeper in the mountains than any other summit in the Big Almaty Gorge system. Where Tourist Peak (3,954 m) and Big Almaty Peak (3,682 m) are reachable from the Cosmostation in a few hours, Molodaya Gvardiya requires a full day of approach through the Ozernoe gorge just to reach a camp below the route. The remoteness is part of the experience — and part of the reason snow leopards still leave their prints in the snow here.

Our team completed a winter ascent in early 2025 — following snow leopard tracks up the approach valley — and based on the summit logbook, this was the first recorded winter ascent of the peak. The encounter with snow leopard signs at 4,000 m+ underscores how wild this territory remains, despite being only 30 km from downtown Almaty.

Two routes exist to the summit. The southern rocky ridge (1B category) is the more straightforward option — steep rock scrambling with some exposed sections but no glacier travel. The combined route (2A category) involves both rock and ice, with a couloir and knife-edge ridge sections. Your guide selects the route based on conditions and group experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Big Almaty Gorge → Ozernoe Gorge → Camp (~3,200 m)

Depart from the checkpoint in Big Almaty Gorge (GES-1, ~1,900 m). Walk up past Big Almaty Lake and into the Ozernoe gorge — the valley that extends south behind Satpayev Peak (4,317 m). The trail passes through forest, then opens into alpine meadows.

Arrive at the Geranium Meadow (Гераневая поляна) area and establish camp near the mountain hut. The hut provides basic shelter; camping alongside is normal. Afternoon: rest, acclimatise, scout conditions on the approach slopes. Evening briefing on the summit plan.

Hiking time: ~4–5 hours. Distance: ~15 km. Elevation gain: ~1,300 m.

Day 2: Camp → Summit (4,400 m) → Descent → Return to Almaty

Early start (4:00–5:00 AM) to take advantage of firm snow conditions and maximise daylight. From camp, ascend through moraine terrain into the upper Kyzylsay area. The route steepens significantly above 3,500 m — loose scree gives way to rock and (on the 2A route) ice.

1B route (southern ridge): Steep rock scrambling on the southern ridge. Exposed sections requiring careful footwork but no ropes for experienced scramblers. The ridge narrows before the summit — the final approach follows a rocky crest.

2A route (combined): A couloir of approximately 300 m leads to a knife-edge ridge (“nozh”). One rock wall and a second knife-edge section before the summit. Rope work required. More technical but more dramatic.

Summit (4,400 m): Panoramic view of the entire upper Big Almaty Gorge system and the main Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge. Visible peaks: Talgar (5,017 m), Ordzhonikidze (4,410 m), Satpayev/Sovetov (4,317 m), Ozerny (4,110 m), Dmitriev Glacier, Chok-Tal, Kantbastau. The Kyzylsay gorge drops away to the south — wild, glaciated, and uninhabited.

Descend to camp, pack up, and return through the Ozernoe gorge to Big Almaty Gorge. Transfer back to Almaty by evening.

Summit day stats: +1,200 m / -2,500 m. Total day: 8–12 hours.

Why book this guided climb?

Route-finding in remote terrain. The Ozernoe gorge above the hut has no marked trails. The approach to Molodaya Gvardiya crosses moraine, scree, and potentially snow-covered slopes where the “path” is read from terrain features. Your guide has done this route and knows the line.

Technical sections. Both routes involve exposed scrambling. The 2A route requires rope work on the couloir and knife-edge ridge. Your guide manages rope systems and belays.

Altitude and remoteness. At 4,400 m with a 2,500 m total gain over 2 days, this is physically and physiologically demanding. You are deep in the mountains — mobile coverage is nonexistent, evacuation would take a full day minimum. Your guide carries communication equipment and first aid.

Snow leopard territory. The upper Ozernoe and Kyzylsay valleys are confirmed snow leopard habitat. You won’t see the cat, but you may see its tracks — as our team did in 2025.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
