Description
A guided climb of Peak Pogranichnik (“Border Guard,” 3,824 m) — the highest summit of the Kyrgauldy gorge in the western part of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, a section of the Northern Tien Shan barely touched by tourism. The turnoff into Kyrgauldy lies just 16 km from Almaty off the Upper Kaskelen road, yet the gorge sees so few visitors that established trails into its upper reaches are scarce — making this a genuine wilderness climb close to the city.
What to expect on the Pogranichnik climb
Most of Almaty’s climbing happens in the busy Tuyuk-Su cirque. Kyrgauldy is the opposite: a quiet, wild western gorge where you can spend two days without seeing another group. The gorge divides into three branches — Left Kyrgauldy (the longest, holding Peak Pogranichnik), Middle (the shortest, ending at an unnamed 2,754 m summit), and Right (ending at Peak Kyzylzhar / Krestovaya, 3,550 m).
The landscape climbs through distinct zones: the lower “prilavki” terraces (1,000–1,700 m) with wild apple orchards and shrub, then a spruce belt (1,700–2,800 m) on steepening slopes, and finally alpine meadows above. Unlike the Tuyuk-Su peaks, Kyrgauldy has no glacier belt — the highest summits are rocky, with small rock sections and old moraines in the valley heads. This makes Pogranichnik a non-glaciated alpine objective: serious terrain and altitude, but without crevasse hazard.
The summit (3,824 m) rewards the effort with a panorama over the western Zailiyskiy Alatau and, on the approach, the Dolan plateau (1,885 m) — a gentle shelf that serves as the gateway to the Left Kyrgauldy branch.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Almaty → Kyrgauldy dachas → high camp (~2,500–2,800 m)
Drive from Almaty through Kamenka (Akzhar) onto the Upper Kaskelen road, turning into Kyrgauldy after the village (~16 km from the city). Continue by 4×4 to the Kyrgauldy dachas (a further 7–8 km) and on toward the Dolan plateau (1,885 m). The area lies within Ile-Alatau National Park; an entry checkpoint is on the access road.
From the road’s end, hike up the Left Kyrgauldy branch through the spruce belt into the alpine zone, establishing a high camp below the summit. Overnight in tents.
Day 2: Summit Pogranichnik (3,824 m) and descent
Early start. Climb through alpine meadow and moraine to the rocky upper slopes of Pogranichnik. The final section involves scrambling on rocky terrain (some small rock steps) to the 3,824 m summit. Enjoy the views over the western Zailiyskiy Alatau, then descend the same route to the road and drive back to Almaty.
Note: Because the gorge is little-travelled and through-trails are scarce, route-finding is a real part of this climb — one reason a guide is essential here.

Did the 2-day Altyn-Emel trip. The Singing Dune at sunset was magical. Our guide handled everything - permits, accommodation, meals. We just showed up and enjoyed. Already planning our next trip with Zabugorshiki.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
