Aksay Gorge: the Closed Valley and its 3,735 m Peak

Every gorge around Almaty has a personality. Aksay’s is distance – not in kilometres, but in permission and effort. The valley west of the city is closed country: vehicle entry needs a special permit, the approaches are long, and the peaks at its head – Aksay Peak (3,735 m) and Yukon – see a fraction of the traffic that comparable summits get elsewhere. Which is precisely the appeal.

Why 3,735 m here is not 3,735 m elsewhere

By Almaty standards the number looks modest – the city’s hikers collect 4,000ers the way others collect fridge magnets. But Aksay’s summits are guarded by everything except technical difficulty: remoteness from any settlement, a closed valley you cannot simply drive into, long waterless stretches, and weather with room to run. The standard ascent of Aksay Peak takes two to three days; with a vehicle permit deep into the gorge, strong parties compress it into one enormous day linking Yukon and Aksay – the kind of push where the water runs out on the descent and an Almaty aport apple eaten on a hurricane-blown pass becomes the finest meal of the year. The hermitage and the cross

Aksay is also a valley of pilgrims. Its slopes hold an Orthodox hermitage with a long history, and the three-metre cross standing on Aksay Peak’s summit was carried up by monks – by hand. Whatever your faith, standing at 3,735 m beside a cross that came up the same slopes on human shoulders recalibrates your sense of what “hard day” means.

Planning an Aksay trip

• Permits: vehicle access into the gorge requires a special permit arranged in advance – the single factor that decides whether your trip is one day or three.
• Water: map your sources before you go and carry reserves; the upper routes have long dry stretches, and running out on the descent is the classic Aksay story.
• Route: the Yukon-Aksay link-up is the connoisseur’s line – Yukon first, then the traverse toward Aksay Peak. Plan rest points and turn-around times like an alpinist, not a picnicker.
• Register: this is exactly the remote, hard-to-reach terrain the eQonaq rules were written for.
