Karabastau (3,972 m): the Wildest Trek in the Issyk Mountains

Some routes near Almaty are popular. Some are quiet. Karabastau is neither – it is empty. This three-day trek climbs out of the Issyk Lake valley into mountains with no trails, no signal and, on most trips, no other human beings, topping out on Karabastau North (3,972 m) with a panorama across Turgen, Chon-Turgen and the Assy plateau. It is the closest thing the region offers to genuine exploration – with everything that word implies.

Day 1: Issyk Lake to base camp (~6 km, +1,500 m)

The route leaves from below the main Issyk Lake parking, rounding the lake on its left side past the forest-service cabins, then climbing a traversing line up scree. A faint path exists at the bottom and dissolves as you climb – from here on, this is route-reading country: you need the GPS track, a general sense of the terrain, and patience with vegetation that thickens as the ground steepens. A stream crossing, then dense raspberry thickets, then a broad meadow that looks like the easy part.

It is not always the easy part. On our trip, a boot found a ground nest in that meadow grass and the wild wasps answered with seventeen stings – the full account involves putting on every layer we carried as armour and detouring through the trees, listening hard. The lesson stands for any genuinely wild place here: long clothing through the grass, ears open, and know whether anyone in your group carries an allergy. There is other wildlife about too – flattened thickets on our return said something large had passed – which is exactly what “rarely visited” means.

Over the pass – fog permitting – and down a steepish descent to the moraine, camp goes up at roughly 2,960 m, about nine hours after leaving the lake. Early to bed; the summit day starts at dawn.

Day 2: the summits (~9 km round trip, +1,000 m)

From camp, gentle moraine leads into a wide couloir where the work begins: loose scree at the “one step up, two sliding back” grade, keeping to the right side of the line. About two and a half hours of it delivers you to Karabastau North – a broad, flat summit platform at 3,972 m with the whole Issyk mountain world laid out: the Turgen valleys, Pryamaya Shchel, Julia peak, the town of Esik far below and the Assy plateau on the horizon. The traverse continues to the second Karabastau summit for those with legs left; the descent retraces the couloir. Day three walks back out the way you came – raspberries, meadow, lake.

Before you consider it

• No trails. This route is navigation, not path-following. A loaded GPS track and the ability to read terrain are entry requirements, not nice-to-haves.
• Register and tell people – the eQonaq rules exist for precisely this terrain.
• Full self-sufficiency: camp kit, water strategy, first aid – see the gear guide and add long clothing for the overgrown sections.
