Description

Peak Uchitel (4,530 m) is one of the classic climbs from the Ratsek hut, the mountain hut at 3,350 m that has served as base camp for Ala-Archa climbers for decades. The route is graded 1B: a long, steep ascent over boulder fields to a pass and a short ridge to the summit, with no technical climbing. It’s a high, demanding day rather than a technical one, and the whole way up you look at Korona, Free Korea (Svobodnaya Koreya) and Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak, the big walls that made Ala-Archa famous.

Two days are enough from Bishkek: on the first you walk up to the hut, on the second you climb to the summit and come all the way down.

Not to be confused with Peak Uchitel (4,045 m) in the Almaty mountains, a 2A rock climb we also run.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek → Ratsek hut

Early pickup in Bishkek and the drive to Ala-Archa, about 1 hour, with a stop for supplies on the way. From the park checkpoint the electric shuttle takes us to the trailhead at the end of the road. The trail climbs to the Tepshi plateau and then follows the moraine of the Ak-Sai glacier to the hut. It’s a good trail with no technical sections: 3-4 hours at an easy pace. The last stretch is a stone-paved path that leads straight to the hut.

After settling in, we walk over to the “Crocodile”, the icefall at the snout of the Ak-Sai glacier. The trail to Korona and Free Korea runs along it, and the seracs are as impressive as the peaks above. Then dinner, a briefing for the summit day and an early night.

Day 2: Summit and descent

Wake-up at 4:00, breakfast and a start at 5:00 by headlamp. Eat even if you don’t feel like it: food is your best defence against altitude sickness, and the route stays in the shade for most of the morning. Almost straight away we leave the main trail and climb a steep slope to the left. After a couple of hours the sun rises behind you over the whole of Ala-Archa.

Snow slope below the pass on the way to Peak Uchitel

Higher up the trail crosses a big boulder field to the “Hare’s Ears”, a large rock just below the pass. In early summer much of it is under snow, which many climbers find easier going. From the pass a short, easy ridge leads to the summit, with the north wall of Free Korea right opposite.

The descent to the hut takes about 3 hours. After lunch we pack up and walk down to the park entrance, about 1.5 hours, and drive back to Bishkek, arriving in the evening.

Who this climb is for

You don’t need technical climbing experience, but this is a serious day: you start at 3,350 m, climb about 1,200 m to 4,530 m and then descend more than 2,000 m to the park entrance. You should be comfortable on long, steep days in the mountains, and ideally you’ve been above 4,000 m before. Peak Komsomolets (4,204 m) in the same park is a good warm-up.

Good to know

  • Weather and the summit. Your guide sets the turnaround time and will turn the group back if the weather, the conditions or the pace make it unsafe to continue.
  • The Ratsek hut. Simple bunk beds, no central heating (electric heaters for an extra fee) and a small bar selling drinks, snacks and boiling water. We book beds in advance; if the hut is full on your dates, we sleep in tents next to it, which we provide.
  • Sleeping bag. Nights at 3,350 m are cold even in summer. Bring a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of about -10 °C.
  • What to bring. Mountaineering boots or stiff hiking boots, thermal underwear, a fleece, a down jacket, a waterproof jacket and trousers, light gloves and warm mittens, a hat, a buff, a headlamp, sunglasses and sunscreen. See our hiking gear guide.
  • Getting to Bishkek. Bishkek has an international airport (Manas). From Almaty it’s about 4 hours by road, including the land border at Korday.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

I had a great experience, communication was very clear from the beginning to the day my guide Eldar picked me up at the hotel. I did the Big Almaty Circuit with Satpayev peak. My guide was great, and took care of everything. He knows the mountains very well and speaks English. They provided a very good quality tent, mat and sleeping bag! Thanks to the whole team!

Denis is a skilful driver, especially on the demanding roads of Altyn-Emel National Park. He knew just when to lend me a hand, and the route he chose was challenging yet fun! The Aktau Mountains are absolutely unique and the views are incredible. I would never have imagined such a stark difference between Shymbulak and Aktau. Thank you for planning this hike for me! Denis also took brilliant drone videos for us. Marvellous! I'm so glad I had you to handle my itinerary and time in Almaty. I appreciate the way you went beyond expectations to meet my requests, like changing hotels and hiking plans, especially when I had difficulties with my previous hotels. Spasibo!
