Description

Two hours north of Almaty, where the Ili river cuts through desert steppe, the rocks of Tamgaly-Tas rise straight off the water – and they carry two entirely different claims to fame. For historians: Buddha images and Tibetan inscriptions carved into the rock faces, generally dated to the Dzungar era of the 17th century, standing improbably in the middle of Kazakh steppe. For climbers: the region’s best-loved crag, with bolted routes from beginner grades to lines that shut down professionals. Most visitors come for one and discover the other.

One disambiguation first: this is not the UNESCO-listed Tamgaly petroglyph site, which lies in a different valley and is millennia older. Same name family – “stones with signs” – different places.

The climbing

Tamgaly-Tas is where Almaty’s climbing clubs bring their spring and autumn sessions. Routes run from French grade 4 – genuine beginner territory – up through the 5s and 6s where most sport climbers live, into 7s and a set of 8s that are the crag’s hardest established lines; the bolted 9s remain unclimbed. Sectors spread along the river: the Harbour (Gavan) sector deeper in the gorge hides a cave whose depth you can measure yourself – bring a rope; the Canyon sector connects to the Hanging Stone with its 70-metre view over the Ili valley.

Beyond the rope: walks, camps, sunsets

You do not need to climb to fill a weekend here. A circular walk links the Harbour sector, the top of the Hanging Stone and the canyon floor – a genuinely beautiful little trek. Riverside camping is the standard format: tents among the rocks, fires in the evening, and a night sky that reflects whole in the slow-moving Ili. In a lucky season the midges stay away entirely; in an unlucky one, bring repellent and thank us later.

Ten minutes down the new road sits Nomad City – the film-set fortress built for the 2005 epic – which pairs naturally with Tamgaly-Tas into a single steppe day trip.

Practicalities

  • Getting there: ~2 hours by car from Almaty via the Kapshagay direction; the final approach is unpaved but passable for ordinary cars in dry weather.
  • Season: spring and autumn are prime – summer bakes, and even in spring the wind off the steppe cuts cold at dawn; a warm layer earns its place in the pack year-round.
  • Respect the carvings: the Buddha images survive because visitors keep their hands and chalk off them. Climb the climbing sectors; photograph the sacred ones.

Want it organised – transport, camp, a rope and someone who knows which grade to put you on? Ask us; Tamgaly-Tas trips run spring through autumn.

We were a group of 4 friends and the per-person price made it a no-brainer. Private 4x4, lunch included, and the canyon was breathtaking. Way better than the big bus tours we saw there.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
