Description

Kumbelsu is the wild valley of the Big Almaty gorge system – no resort at the bottom, no crowds on the trail, and at its head one of the area’s most striking secrets: Lake 13, a cluster of two large and three small glacial tarns beneath the walls of Sovetov and Lokomotiv peaks. Above them rises Molodezhny Peak (4,147 m), whose 1A route through this valley is one of the most accessible four-thousanders in the Almaty mountains – and one of the longest days you can give yourself here.

The route

The walk starts near the Alpine Rose hotel in the Big Almaty gorge and climbs first to the Lunar Meadow – a wide flower-filled clearing with, by local consensus, the best-tasting spring in the district. Fill everything you can carry: there is no reliable water from here to the next valley. The route then takes the Zheltau ridge toward the Kumbelsu and Shukur passes, with the Tereshkova pass and peak in view across the valley, before dropping toward the upper Kumbelsu and the moraine country below Sovetov’s glacier.

The lakes sit in the moraine at around 3,300 m, colour-shifting with the season and the light, with the Sovetov glacier hanging above them – a glacier that periodically sends down rockfall as a reminder of whose valley this is. The old hydrologists’ hut near the lakes is the traditional overnight landmark for two-day itineraries. From the lakes, the 1A line to Molodezhny’s summit follows the great ridge – glacier falling away on one side, steep scree and rock on the other – to a top with one of the finest panoramas in the region: Turist, Sovetov, Molodaya Gvardiya, Turan, Lokomotiv and the whole high crest in one sweep.

Honest notes

  • This is remote-country hiking: the trail fades on the ridge, signal disappears early, and companions are rare. Carry a GPS track, file your route registration, and never do it solo.
  • A 25 kg pack and a heatwave is the standard way this route humbles people – go light, go early.
  • Acclimatisation matters: 1,600 to 4,147 m in a day is a big swing. The two-day version with a night near the lakes is both safer and better.
  • Want the lakes without the summit? Turning around at Lake 13 still makes one of the best wild days in the Almaty lakes family.

We run Kumbelsu as a guided two-day trip on request – camp kit provided, judgment included. Ask us.

Did the 2-day Altyn-Emel trip. The Singing Dune at sunset was magical. Our guide handled everything - permits, accommodation, meals. We just showed up and enjoyed. Already planning our next trip with Zabugorshiki.

Solo traveler here. I was nervous about hiking alone in a foreign country but the guide made me feel completely safe. The trail to Kok-Zhailau was beautiful and the photos he took of me were amazing. Only wish the hike was longer!

Third time booking with these guys. Butakovka, Big Almaty Lake, and now Titov Peak. Every single time the service is flawless. The fact that it's always private and max 6 people makes such a difference compared to other operators.
